Cryptids—known in Japan as UMA, or “unidentified mysterious animals”—are creatures that have not been formally defined by biology. Some are feared as harmful to humans or other living things, while others attract devoted fans of the strange.
In Japan, one of the most famous examples is the tsuchinoko, a legendary snake-like creature. Itoigawa City in Niigata Prefecture, where sightings have been reported, even created a bounty offering up to 100 million yen to anyone who captures one. As recently as 2019, events called “Tsuchinoko Exploration Team” were still being held, showing just how powerful the creature’s popularity—and its value for local tourism—had become.
But Japan is not the only country swept up in cryptid fever. In the United States, the home of countless UFO legends, one cryptid has become so widely recognized that a statue stands in the place where it was reportedly seen.
Its name is Mothman: a devilish unidentified creature said to have appeared in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
What Does Mothman Look Like?
Mothman is usually described as a winged, bipedal creature about two meters tall, covered in gray hair. Its body shape is said to resemble a human silhouette, but where a human head should be, there is no head—only two glowing red eyes.
The creature was first reported in 1966 in the Point Pleasant area of West Virginia. Since then, many sightings have been reported, especially around West Virginia.
Some witnesses claimed they were chased by Mothman as it flew through the air. Strangely, they said it moved at high speed without flapping its wings at all. If that is true, what kind of force could have been propelling it?
The Silver Bridge Connection
No discussion of Mothman is complete without mentioning the film The Mothman Prophecies.
In the movie, a bridge collapses and many people die because of Mothman. That collapse was based on a real disaster: the Silver Bridge collapse. On December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge, which connected Point Pleasant to Ohio, fell into the Ohio River. Forty-six people lost their lives.
Around this tragedy, many occult theories spread. Some claimed that a girl had seen the bridge collapse in a prophetic dream. Others said large numbers of UFOs were seen the day before the disaster. Among these stories was one especially eerie testimony: shortly before the collapse, someone reportedly saw a creature like Mothman perched on the bridge.
After the disaster, Mothman sightings sharply declined. Because the bridge stood in an area where many sightings had been reported, rumors spread that the collapse was Mothman’s curse on humans who had been investigating its existence.
As a side note, The Mothman Prophecies includes a scene where Mothman makes threatening phone calls to the protagonist. It is a strangely surreal image, and oddly entertaining.
For travelers: Point Pleasant is a real town with Mothman-themed attractions, but visitors should stick to public areas, respect local property, and never enter restricted roads, bridge sites, or private land while exploring folklore locations.
Was Mothman Really a Bird?
Because Mothman is known for flying, many people have argued that its true identity was some kind of large bird.
At the time, the police reportedly suggested that Mothman might have been a “shitepoke,” a large heron, that had strayed from its migrating flock. However, the residents who claimed to have seen Mothman were mostly unconvinced by that explanation.
There are also dubious but intriguing stories that, once investigations into Mothman began, birds such as owls and condors—species that supposedly had not originally lived in the nearby area—began appearing in West Virginia.
Was someone deliberately releasing birds into the wild to confuse the investigation?
It is hard to imagine Mothman itself carrying out that kind of misdirection. If such interference really happened, it would suggest that humans who knew about Mothman’s existence were trying to conceal it.
Mothman and UFOs
Another strange feature of the Mothman legend is the unusually high number of UFO sightings reported in the same area. UFOs were also said to have been seen the day before the Silver Bridge collapse.
Some witnesses have even claimed they saw Mothman being drawn up into a UFO. Because of stories like these, one theory says that Mothman was an alien pet.
But would aliens really release their pet onto Earth, a place that would be unknown territory to them?
Considering Mothman’s powerful flying ability and its red eyes that shine like searchlights, another theory may sound more plausible within the logic of the legend: Mothman could be an artificial creature created by aliens to monitor Earth.
Thinking About the Curse
From here, this becomes the author’s own interpretation.
Many people say the Silver Bridge collapsed because of Mothman’s curse. But the more I looked into the story, the more I began to question whether that was really the case.
There are many occult elements surrounding the bridge collapse besides Mothman: the girl who supposedly saw the disaster in a prophetic dream, the UFOs reportedly seen near the site, and other strange rumors. And if Mothman wanted to eliminate humans who were prying into its existence, surely there would have been more direct ways to do it than destroying a bridge.
For that reason, I do not think the Silver Bridge collapse and Mothman’s curse are necessarily connected.
However, the idea that Mothman curses certain people is harder for the legend to let go of. According to rumors connected to The Mothman Prophecies, more than 80 people involved in the film’s production have already died.
In less than a year after its first sighting, Mothman rose to become one of America’s most iconic cryptids. If it is truly part of an alien reconnaissance force, then perhaps humanity’s first encounter with the unknown is closer than we think.

UMA、通称未確認生物。。未だ生物学上の定義がされていない謎多き生物の総称です。それらは時に人間や他の生物に害をなし、恐れられ、また、一部の好事家達の注目を集めています。日本だとツチノコが有名ですね。目撃例のあった新潟県糸魚川市が、ツチノコを捕獲した人に最大で1億円の賞金を与えるというツチノコ懸賞金を制定したのも記憶に新しいです。本記事を執筆している2019年にも『つちのこ探検隊』と銘打ったイベントが行われているくらいですから、 その人気、もとい町おこし効果は強力なものだった のでしょう。
しかし、UMAブームに騒ぐのは日本だけではありません。UFOの本場アメリカでは、目撃地に銅像が作られるほど市民権を得ているUMAがいます。その名はモスマン。。ポイント・プレザントに出現した悪魔のような未確認生物です。。公開日：2019年11月5日 更新日：2020年3月8日 。１.モスマンの特徴。。モスマンは、体長2メートル程で二足歩行の有翼生物であり、全身を灰色の毛に覆われています。体のシルエットは人間のそれに近いのですが、人間であれば頭部があるべき部分に頭がなく、代わりに 赤く光る二つの目 がついています。
このUMAは、1966年にアメリカのウエストバージニア州にあるポイント・プレザントという地域で発見されました。以降も ウエストバージニア州を中心に多数の目撃例 があります。目撃例の中には飛行するモスマンに追いかけられたという事例がありますが、その際にモスマンは一切翼を動かすことなく高速で飛んでいたそうです。どういった推進力で動いているのでしょうか。。２.シルバーブリッジ事件との関連性。。このUMAを語る上で外せないのが、 モスマンを題材にした映画『プロフェシー』 です。
劇中では、モスマンのせいで橋が崩落し大量の人が亡くなってしまうというシーンがあるのですが、実はこの崩落事件は実際に起きた事件をモデルにしています。その事件の名前はシルバーブリッジ事件、1967年12月15日にポイント・プレザントとオハイオ州を結ぶ大橋、シルバーブリッジが崩落し、 46人もの犠牲者が出たという大事件 です。。画像引用元： モスマン 。この事件に関して、 橋が崩落する光景を予知夢で見た少女 がいた、この 事件が発生する前日に大量のUFOを見た など、様々なオカルト的仮説が伝播したのですが、その中に 事件発生の少し前に、橋の上に止まっている モスマンのような生物を見た 、という証言がありました。
その事件を境にモスマンの目撃情報がぱったりと減り、また、橋の場所がモスマンの目撃例が多発していた地域だったことから、橋の崩落は自らの存在を嗅ぎ回った人間達へのモスマンの呪いであるという噂が広がりました。※余談ですがプロフェシーの作中では、モスマンが主人公に脅迫電話をかけるシーンがあります。随分シュールな光景で面白いです。。３.モスマンの正体は鳥？。。空を飛ぶ、という特徴からモスマンの正体は大きな鳥であるとする説が多数派です。。当時の警察の見解としては、モスマンは渡りの群れからはぐれたシエートポークという大きなサギであるということでした。
しかし、モスマンを実際に見た住民たちからは、ほとんど賛同を得られませんでした。。。また、眉唾ではありますがモスマンの調査を始めた頃から、元々近隣地域にいなかった筈のフクロウやコンドルなどの鳥類がウエストバージニア州で発見され始めたそうです。誰かが調査を撹乱するためにわざと野に鳥を放ったのでしょうか。。こういった撹乱をモスマンが行うとは考えづらく、人間の中にもモスマンの存在を知り、それを隠蔽するものがいたと考えられます。４.モスマンと宇宙人の関係性。
。また、モスマンの出現地域ではUFOの目撃例が異様に多いことも特徴に挙げられます。シルバーブリッジ崩落の際にも事件前日にUFOが目撃されていました。また、目撃例の中には UFOにモスマンが吸い込まれていくのを見たという声も あります。これらの事から、モスマンは宇宙人のペットであるという説があります。しかし、自らのペットを宇宙人にとって未開の地である地球に放つでしょうか。。どちらかといえば、高い飛行能力と、サーチライトのように光る赤い目という特徴から、 モスマンの正体は宇宙人が地球を監視するために作った人工生物である と考える方が現実味があるように思えます。
５.モスマンの呪い考察。。ここからは筆者の見解です。一般的に、シルバーブリッジを崩落させたのはモスマンの呪いの力によるものとする説が多いですが、 調べて行く内に、私は果たして本当にそうなのだろうかと感じるよう になりました。この事件を予知夢で見た少女や、現場付近で見られたUFOなど、モスマン以外にもシルバーブリッジの崩落に関わってくる オカルト的な要素 は沢山あります。それに、自らの存在を探ろうとする人間を消したいのなら、橋を落とすよりももっと直接的な方法があるはずです。
。そういった疑念もあり、 私はシルバーブリッジ崩落の件とモスマンの呪いは関係ない と考えました。ただ、条件に当てはまる人間をモスマンが呪い殺そうとしているという事については、私は少しの疑いも持っていません。実際、先述の映画『プロフェシー』撮影に関わった人間は、既に80人以上が亡くなっているのですから。。最初に目撃されてから、1年足らずでアメリカンUMAの代表格に躍り出たモスマン。彼が宇宙人の偵察部隊ならば、我々はそう遠くない内に未知との遭遇を果たすかもしれません
