Urban legends exist all over the world. Most are treated as rumors with no solid proof, but the story introduced here is different. It is based on a real person.
Have you heard of “Faceless Charlie,” a famous urban legend from Pennsylvania in the United States? He was said to appear at night in residential areas: a smooth, blank-faced figure with no eyes or nose. Because his face was also said to glow green, people called him the “Green Man” and feared him.
But the truth behind the legend was not a monster story. It was a painful, frightening, and deeply sad true story.
This is the story of the American urban legend known as Faceless Charlie or the Green Man, and of the real man behind it: Raymond Robinson.
The Urban Legend of Faceless Charlie, the Green Man
In the 1920s, people in Pennsylvania began reporting a strange figure after dark. He was seen on roads and in the shadows near tunnels, giving off an eerie green glow.
The strange light, the unusual face, and the fact that he was usually seen only at night led some locals to call him an “incarnation of the devil.”
Some people claimed they had gathered enough courage to look directly at his face. According to those stories, the figure had no proper face, almost like a smooth-faced ghost. They also said there was a large hole in the center of his face.
The rumor spread quickly. Before long, the story became known as the urban legend of “Faceless Charlie” or “the Green Man.” It was reportedly talked about among American soldiers as well.
Raymond Robinson, the Real Man Behind the Legend
The mysterious figure called Faceless Charlie or the Green Man was not a demon. He was based on a real man named Raymond Robinson.
Raymond Robinson was born in 1910. When he was nine years old, he climbed a tree to look at a bird’s nest. He slipped and fell.
During the fall, he came into contact with a power line.
The voltage was reportedly 1,200 volts. For comparison, an electric chair used for executions is often described as roughly 1,000 to 2,000 volts. A normal household outlet in Japan is 100 or 200 volts.
Doctors did not expect Raymond to survive. Miraculously, he lived.
But the accident left him severely injured. He lost both eyes, his nose, and his ears. One of his arms was also badly damaged and deformed by the electric shock. The electrocution also left a large greenish mark on his face.
Under streetlights, that mark was said to glow an unnatural green.
The Painful Reality Behind the Urban Legend
After the accident, Raymond Robinson lived apart from much of society. He spent his days making leather wallets and belts, helping with lawn work, and living quietly.
He had lost much, but he did not lose his hearing. His main pleasures were listening to the radio and going for walks. He especially enjoyed hiking around his home.
For a time, Raymond lived quietly. Then construction work changed his usual hiking route, and his daily life changed with it.
His walking route shifted to the more heavily traveled Route 351. To avoid being seen, he usually went out at night.
But when people encountered Raymond in the dark, many were terrified. Some called him a devil-like figure. Eventually, the stories grew into the urban legend of Faceless Charlie, the Green Man.
When Raymond went out, he reportedly carried a cane, a mat, and a wallet. It is said that he sometimes allowed people to take his photograph in exchange for cigarettes. Because of that, many photos of him still remain online today. However, the images can be disturbing, and they should be viewed with care and respect.
What makes the story especially painful is that not everyone who encountered him treated him kindly.
Some people reportedly found out where Raymond slept and attacked him at night. Others committed cruel acts such as threatening to run him over with a car. Some forced him to drink alcohol, honked horns and caused trouble outside his home, or picked him up in a car only to abandon him somewhere else.
These were not harmless pranks. They were acts of cruelty against a vulnerable person.
Because of incidents like these, Raymond’s family begged him to stop going out at night. But he never gave up his nighttime walks.
Raymond Robinson died at the age of 74 in a nursing home.
A Legend Born From a Sad True Story
Faceless Charlie, the Green Man, is often told like a ghost story or a frightening American urban legend. But behind it was the life of Raymond Robinson, a real person who survived a horrific accident and then became the subject of fear, rumors, and harassment.

。この話はたちまち広がり、 都市伝説「顔なしチャーリー」「グリーンマン」 としてアメリカ兵の間で話題になりました。顔なしチャーリー・グリーンマンのモデル「レイモンド・ロビンソン」。。「顔なしチャーリー・グリーンマン」と呼ばれた謎の人物、実は 実在した一人の男性 がモデルとなっています。名前はレイモンド・ロビンソン。。1910 年に生まれたレイモンド・ロビンソンは9歳の時に鳥の巣をのぞこうと木に登っていました。しかし誤って手を滑らしてしまい、落下。
その際に 電線に接触 してしまったのです。電線のボルト数は、なんと 1200 ボルト 。。※死刑に使われる電気イスがだいたい1000～2000ボルト。日本の家庭用電源は100か200ボルトですね。医師は助かる見込みはないと考えていましたが、レイモンドは奇跡的に生き延びることができました。しかしこの事故によって、彼は 両眼と鼻、耳を失い 、 片方の腕も電線に接触した際の電気の衝撃で吹き飛び 、変形してしまいました。。また感電の影響で、顔には 大きな緑色のシミ ができました。
このシミが、街頭で緑色に怪しく光ったのです。。都市伝説の裏側：レイモンド・ロビンソンの辛すぎる実話。。醜い姿になってしまったレイモンド・ロビンソンは、社会から離れ、孤独に暮らすようになりました。。革の財布やベルトを作ったり、芝刈りの手伝いをしたりして、1日を過ごしました。聴力だけは失わなかった彼の唯一の娯楽は、 ラジオと散歩 。家の周りのハイキングが好きでした。静かに暮らしていたレイモンドですが、いつものハイキングコースに工事業者が入ったことで、 彼の生活は大きく変わってしまいます 。
