Shimane Prefecture, located in the western part of Japan, is steeped in spiritual significance. Known for its rich cultural heritage, it is said that every October, the ‘Eight Million Gods’ gather in Izumo City, a place famous for its shrine, Izumo Taisha, which is renowned for matchmaking. However, Japanese mythology also states that the entrance to the afterlife, Yomi no Kuni, is located in Izumo, making Shimane a land that straddles the boundary between the living and the dead.

Amidst this spiritual backdrop lies the hauntingly beautiful Iwami Tatami Ura, a natural scenic area characterized by its unique rock formations. This site is not only a designated Natural Monument but also infamous as a spiritual hotspot. Local legends speak of many tragic incidents, including drownings and suicides, which have occurred in this area, leading to its recognition as a haunted site.

The eerie reputation of Iwami Tatami Ura is closely tied to the Saino Kawara, a cave that serves as a passageway to the coast. This cave has been the site of numerous ghost sightings and paranormal experiences, making it a focal point for those intrigued by the supernatural. Visitors have reported hearing children’s voices and witnessing spectral figures, contributing to the site’s dark allure.

The Connection to Water Children: The term ‘Mizuko,’ or water children, refers to the spirits of children who died before their parents. In traditional Japanese beliefs, these spirits are often thought to linger near bodies of water, seeking solace and remembrance. The Saino Kawara is said to be a resting place for these souls, and its very name evokes the image of stone towers built by the deceased children to help them cross over to the afterlife.

The legend claims that if these towers are not completed, the spirits cannot move on, resulting in their continuous suffering. This belief has led to the construction of numerous Jizo statues and stone towers around the cave, where locals come to pay their respects and offer prayers to these lost souls.

Folklore and Cultural Significance: The stories surrounding Iwami Tatami Ura and Saino Kawara delve deeply into the themes of life, death, and the societal practices of yesteryear, such as the infanticide of unwanted children. In ancient times, impoverished families often resorted to extreme measures during famine, leading to the deaths of many infants. These tragic events have left an indelible mark on the spiritual landscape of Shimane, resulting in the accumulation of the anguished spirits of these water children.

Today, these sites serve as a grim reminder of the past, yet they also attract visitors seeking to connect with the spiritual realm. It is believed that by offering flowers or sweets to the Jizo statues, one may bring peace to the spirits of the water children, allowing them to finally rest.

Exploring Iwami Tatami Ura and Saino Kawara is not just a journey into a picturesque landscape but also a profound encounter with Japan’s rich tapestry of folklore and the enduring legacy of its cultural practices surrounding death and the afterlife.
