Zukawa Tunnel (Old Tsuzura Tunnel): Rumors of Spirits on Toyama’s Route 64

Hachioji Castle Ruins: Tokyo’s Most Chilling Haunted Historic Site

English Version

Zukawa Tunnel, also known as the old Tsuzura Tunnel, is a haunted spot in Himi, Toyama Prefecture, along Prefectural Route 64 in the Busshoji area.

Some people claim that after passing through the tunnel, they experienced trouble such as flat tires. Others say they suffered sleep paralysis after returning home.

There is a rumor that a woman died by self-immolation either inside the tunnel or somewhere nearby. Another story says that an execution ground once stood near the tunnel, and that the severed heads of executed criminals were thrown into the river. This is said to be connected to the tunnel’s other name, often understood as “Head River Tunnel.”

The road leading to the tunnel is reportedly known as the “White Bone Road.” Inside the tunnel, a Jizo statue is enshrined.

Local ghost stories describe the tunnel and its surroundings as a place where many spirits wander. Whether taken as folklore, rumor, or warning, this is not a place to visit casually or as a prank.

If you go near this area, do so safely and respectfully. Follow local traffic rules, avoid entering restricted or dangerous areas, and do not disturb roadside statues or offerings.
