Shosenkyo Gorge: Ghost Bus Rumors in Yamanashi’s Scenic Ravine

Japan Earthquake Alert: Government Panel Warns of Possible M7-Class Quake off Miyagi

English Version

Shosenkyo Gorge in Kofu, Yamanashi, is known as a beautiful natural destination, but it also has a darker reputation among ghost story fans.

According to local rumors, a blood-covered ghost is said to appear walking through the area at night. Another story claims that a bus carrying the dead can be seen traveling the roads after dark.

These rumors are often linked to a tragic bus accident said to have occurred in 1977, when a bus carrying employees of an insurance company on a company trip went off the road, resulting in many deaths.

It is especially unsettling to imagine that some of the passengers may not have even wanted to join the work trip in the first place. To lose one’s life during something as ordinary as a company outing is a deeply painful thought.

More than 40 years have passed since then, but it is not hard to understand why people might imagine the dead still wandering the area, unable to let go of this world.

The location associated with these stories is in Takanari-cho, Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. If you visit Shosenkyo, go during safe hours, stay on public roads and marked paths, and be respectful of both the natural area and any accident victims connected to these rumors.
