Sasago Tunnel, located on the Chuo Expressway in Hatsukano, Yamato-cho, Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, is associated with several ghost stories and unsettling rumors.
Travelers have spoken of shadowy human figures appearing to cross the road, handprints showing up on cars, engines suddenly stalling, and sightings of what is described as the spirit of a man. These are local rumors, and none of them should be taken as confirmed events.
The tunnel is also known for a real tragedy. On December 2, 2012, the Sasago Tunnel ceiling panel collapse occurred, killing nine people.
If you pass through the area, do so safely and respectfully. Sasago Tunnel is part of an active expressway, so never stop, walk inside, or attempt to investigate on foot.
