Himegafuchi: The Princess Pool and Head-Washing Rumors of Koshu, Yamanashi

Twin Souls, Soulmates, and Spiritual Japan: An Occult Dictionary

English Version

In Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture, there is a place known in local rumor as the “Head-Washing Site.” It is said that the heads of warriors and women sometimes appear there, though this remains a local legend rather than a confirmed account.

Another story connects the area to Takeda Katsuyori, the final head of the Takeda clan. According to the tradition, after Katsuyori took his own life together with his wife and children, 16 ladies-in-waiting threw themselves into the water at Himegafuchi, or “Princess Pool.”

The site is associated with the Tano area of Yamatocho in Koshu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. If you visit, treat the location as a historical and local community site: avoid trespassing, do not enter unsafe areas, and be respectful of nearby residents and memorial spaces.
