English Version
Kotsubo Tunnel in Zushi, Kanagawa, is one of the area’s best-known rumored haunted spots.
Stories associated with the tunnel include a spirit dropping onto the hood of a car, the ghost of a woman standing with one hand raised, an unknown person suddenly appearing in the back seat, and car windows covered with numerous handprints.
One detail often mentioned in connection with the tunnel is that a crematorium is located above it.
The spot appears to have become widely known through a novel by Yasunari Kawabata and a personal account by Cathy Nakajima. As with many haunted-location stories, these are rumors and reported experiences rather than confirmed events.
The tunnel is associated with the area around Kotsubo 7-chome, Zushi City, Kanagawa Prefecture. If you visit, do so safely and respectfully: use public roads, do not trespass, and never stop or walk in a way that could endanger traffic.
