Britain has long had legends of a black dog known as the “Black Dog.” In British folklore, it is widely regarded as a symbol of misfortune and dread. This article introduces the eerie legend of the Black Dog and some of the stories connected to it.
What Is the Black Dog?
As its name suggests, the Black Dog is said to have a pitch-black body. Its eyes are described as red like burning flames, and it has sharp fangs. It is generally believed to appear at night.
Its size varies depending on the story, but some accounts describe it as being as large as a horse or a cow. It is also said to leave behind a strong, unpleasant odor. Other legends claim it can breathe fire from its mouth, appear in a flash of light, or vanish like mist.
Where the Black Dog Appears
The Black Dog is often said to appear in places where someone has died, or in locations considered unlucky or ominous.
In some stories, the Black Dog directly kills people. Other accounts are even more terrifying: simply seeing it, hearing its voice, or touching it may be enough to cause death. Some legends also say that if the Black Dog glares at a person, their body may become unable to move.
The Suffolk Incident of 1577
One of the most famous stories said to involve the Black Dog took place in Suffolk, England, in 1577.
That day, the area had been struck by a severe thunderstorm since morning. Because it was Sunday, many people had gathered at a church for worship. Then lightning struck the church.
At the same moment, a sinister Black Dog reportedly appeared inside the building. It is said to have leapt at the worshippers, killing two people in an instant. The creature then left what looked like scorched claw marks on the church doors before disappearing with an explosive sound and smoke.
According to the legend, that was not the only appearance that day. A Black Dog was also said to have appeared at another village church about 11 kilometers away, where it killed two men and one boy.
After this incident, many more reports and rumors about the Black Dog began to circulate. Over time, the story gradually faded from current memory and became part of local legend.
A Reported Encounter in 1972
However, the Black Dog story did not end in the distant past. In 1972, another incident was said to have occurred.
A farming couple named Mr. and Mrs. Morgan reportedly woke up late at night after hearing an unpleasant noise. Mr. Morgan took a fireplace poker and stepped into the hallway, where he saw a large Black Dog standing there.
Terrified, he threw the poker at the creature. At that moment, it exploded in a flash of light and vanished. The only thing left behind was a sharp smell like sulfur.
In the same year, a similar story was reported on a suburban road. A Black Dog was said to be standing in the way. When someone tried to make it move and it refused, they threw a stone at it. The dog allegedly exploded and disappeared, again leaving behind a sulfur-like odor.
How to Drive Away the Black Dog
Folklore gives a few possible ways to repel the Black Dog. Two of the most commonly mentioned are praying to God and crossing a river, since the Black Dog is said to dislike water.
These are, of course, traditional beliefs rather than proven methods.
Were the Bones of a Black Dog Found?
During an excavation at the ruins of Leiston Abbey in Suffolk, “giant dog bones” were reportedly discovered, leading some people to wonder whether they could be connected to the Black Dog legend.
The bones were found buried about 20 inches, or roughly 50 centimeters, underground. Based on the remains, the animal was estimated to have weighed around 200 pounds, or about 90 kilograms. Standing upright, it may have been more than 2 meters tall. The dog was identified as male.
Considering the size of the bones, the fact that they belonged to a dog, and the history of Black Dog stories in the same region, it is easy to see why some people connect the discovery to the legend. Still, much remains unknown about the Black Dog.
The ruins and the bones were reportedly undergoing radiocarbon dating, so future findings may offer more clarity.
If you visit real historic sites connected to legends like this, follow local rules, respect restricted areas, and avoid entering ruins or church grounds outside permitted access times.

イギリスに昔から伝わる黒い色をした犬「ブラックドック」 。イギリスでは 不吉の象徴 として多くの方に知られています。今回は不吉の象徴ブラックドックについてご紹介したいと思います。ブラックドックの概要 。名前にある通り黒い体をもち、目は燃える炎のように赤く鋭い牙を持っています。基本的には夜に出現するとされています。大きさは馬や牛頬のサイズがあります。刺激臭を残して去るといわれていて、口から炎を吐く、光とともに現れる、霧状に消えるなどと言われています・。
各地に現れるブラックドック 。ブラックドッグは人が死んだ場所や不吉な場所に現れる といわれています。ブラックドックが直接人を殺める場合もあります。しかも ブラックドックを一目見ただけでも死んでしまったり、声を聴いたら死ぬ、触ったら死ぬ 。など凶悪な存在です。にらまれたら体が動かなくなってしまう場合もあるそうです。実際にあったとされるブラックドッグの事件 。1577 年イギリスのサフォーク州という町である事件が起こった のです。その日は朝から激しい雷雨に見舞われていました。
日曜日は礼拝をするためたくさんの人々が集まっていました。するとこの教会に雷が直撃します。それと同時、協会内に不気味なブラックドックが現れたのです。そのブラックドックはあっという間に信者たちにとびかかり 2 人を殺し、協会の扉などに焦げたひっかき傷のようなものを残し、爆発音と煙とともに消えてしまったそうです。。それだけではなく、 同日に 11 ｋｍ離れた村の協会にもブラックドックが現れ、男２人と少年 1 人を殺害 したそうです。この事件をきっかけに多数の情報が寄せられるようになりました。
このことは徐々に風化していき、伝説的な話になっていきました。しかし、 1972 年に再度このブラックドック事件 が起きたのです。農家を営むモーガン夫妻は深夜に耳障りな音で目を覚めたそうです。暖炉の火かき棒を持って廊下に出ると大きなブラックドックがたたずんでいたのです。あまりの恐怖に驚いたモーガンは手に持っていた火かき棒をブラックドックに対して投げつけました。すると閃光とともに爆発してその場から消えてしまったのです。その場に残っていたのは硫黄のような刺激臭だけでした 。
同年に郊外の道路にも出現していました。道にたたずむブラックドックをどかそうと考えるも、一向に動こうとしないブラックドックに対して石を投げると、その瞬間に爆発し、硫黄のような刺激臭を残して消えたそうです。ブラックドッグ撃退方法 。大きく分けて 2 つほどあり、 「神に祈りをささげる」 や ブラックドックは水を苦手としているため「川を渡る」 などといった撃退方法があります。ブラックドックの骨が発見された！？。サフォーク州のレイストン修道院の遺跡発掘際に「巨大な犬の骨」が発見され、ブラックドックではないかと話題になっています。
。その巨大な骨は深さ 20 インチ（ 50 センチ程度）に埋められていて、 発見された骨から推定体重２００ポンド（９０キロ程）立ち上がると 2 メートル以上 と予測されています。性別はオス。この体長と犬の骨、そして過去に同じ地域で事件が起きていると考えるとブラックドックが実在していたと考えてもおかしくはないと考えられますね。現在ブラックドッグについて分かっていることはまだまだ少ないです。現在この骨を含めて、遺跡は放射線炭素年代測定中とのことですので、今後の展開に注目したいですね
