Whales are the largest animals on Earth, yet much about them remains mysterious. Around the world, people have long been unsettled by reports of whales dying in large numbers or washing ashore shortly before major earthquakes.
Japan has its own examples. Looking back at records connected to large earthquakes, there are accounts of whales appearing in nearby seas, ports, or on beaches just days before the shaking began. Is it a warning sign, a coincidence, or something science has not fully explained yet?
Strange cases before major earthquakes in Japan
One often-cited example is connected to the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes, which reached a maximum seismic intensity of 7. About ten days before the quake, a humpback whale was reportedly caught in a set net in Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Four days later, another humpback whale was found stranded in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture. That meant two whales had stranded in areas relatively close to Kumamoto. At the time, experts reportedly described it as unusual, saying that whales were not commonly heard of in the waters around Nagasaki.
Another disturbing case is said to have happened just before the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, 2011. In Ibaraki Prefecture, more than 50 pilot whales were found stranded on the coast of Kashima City. Seven days later, Japan was struck by one of the largest postwar earthquakes in its history.
When mass whale strandings and major earthquakes happen within only a few days of each other, it is easy to understand why people wonder if there may be some connection.
The leading theory: echolocation and pressure waves
So why would whales wash ashore before an earthquake?
One commonly discussed theory involves echolocation. Whales and dolphins emit sound waves and use the returning echoes to understand their surroundings and avoid danger. Some experts have suggested that if this ability is disturbed, it could contribute to mass strandings.
The exact cause of such disturbances is still not fully understood. One idea is that when tectonic plates shift before an earthquake, pressure waves may travel through the ocean and interfere with the whales’ senses. This remains a theory, not a proven earthquake prediction method.
Tokyo Bay, Hakkeijima, and fears of a major Tokyo quake
There have also been concerns connected to whale sightings around Hakkeijima and Tokyo Bay. Some people have wondered whether these sightings could be related to fears of a major earthquake directly beneath the Tokyo metropolitan area, or even a larger Nankai Trough scenario.
Since around June 2018, whale sightings in Tokyo Bay have been reported one after another. Whales entering Tokyo Bay is considered rare, and a whale around 10 meters long reaching deep into the bay is especially unusual. Many believe it may simply have wandered in by accident.
Still, because of past stories linking whales and earthquakes, some people feel uneasy when such sightings occur. For travelers, it is worth remembering that whale sightings are not an official earthquake warning. Always follow Japan Meteorological Agency alerts and local government instructions.
Are whales intelligent enough to act together?
Research has also shown that whales are highly intelligent and social animals. They often act together as a group and appear capable of social bonds and care for one another.
There are cases where many whales may have died because they followed or tried to help a stranded member of their group. This kind of behavior could be one reason mass strandings happen, separate from any earthquake-related theory.
Coincidence, warning sign, or unsolved mystery?
So, are whales truly connected to earthquakes? At this point, no one can say for certain. These events do not always happen before earthquakes, and whale strandings cannot be treated as a reliable prediction method.
However, if many whales are being seen or stranded near your local coast, it is understandable to feel concerned. Do not approach stranded whales or enter restricted coastal areas. Contact local authorities, keep a safe distance, and use the moment as a reminder to review your disaster supplies, evacuation routes, and emergency information sources.
Whether it is coincidence or a sign of something deeper, the eerie timing of some whale strandings continues to haunt Japan’s earthquake folklore.

世界最大の動物クジラ。。このクジラは謎が多い生物であり、未だにわかっていないことがたくさんあるそうです。そしてこのクジラの行動が世界中を賑わせています。その行動とは、 地震が起きる前にクジラが大量死していたり、大量に打ち上げられたりするなどの現象が確認されている からです。過去に起きた日本の大地震などの記録を見てみると、実際に地震発生数日前に近隣の海や港にクジラが打ち上げられていたという記録が残っています。。今回は地震とクジラの関係性についてご紹介していきたいと思います。
日本で発生した地震を予言するかのように・・・ 。。2016 年 04 月 04 日に発生した熊本地震では震度７を記録していた。実はこの 10 日前に 熊本県天草市でザトウクジラが定期網にかかっていた そうです。さらにこの４日後。今度は 長崎県長崎市でザトウクジラが打ち上げられた のです。なんと熊本に近い場所で二頭もクジラが座礁していたのです。この時、専門家は 「長崎の海でクジラがいることも聞かないので珍しい現象」 という見解をしていました。
2011 年 03 月 11 日の東日本大震災の直前では茨城県でゴンドウクジラが 50 頭以上も座礁していた のです。茨城県鹿嶋氏の海岸でクジラ約 50 頭以上が打ち上げられているのが見つかったそうです。そしてこの７日後に戦後最大級の地震。東日本大震災の大地震が日本を襲ったのでした。たった数日の間で起きる、クジラの大量死と大地震の襲撃。。ここまでくると何らかの関係性があるのではないかと思いますよね。有力な説 。。では、なぜ地震の前触れにいるかが打ち上げられるのか不思議に思いますよね。
ここで一番有力な説を紹介したいと思います。専門家によると 「クジラやイルカは超音波を発し、その反響音によって周囲の危険性を認識する「エコロケーション」という能力があるが、この能力が乱れると今回のように大量に座礁する可能性がある」 。エコロケーションに乱れが生じる原因についてはいまだに解明されていませんが、地震の原因のレートがずれ動くとき海に伝わる圧力波が影響しているのではないかといわれています。首都直下型地震との関係性 。。八景島でクジラが目撃され、もしかしたら首都直下型地震に関係があるのではないかと心配する声が上がっています。
やはり、過去の事例を踏まえて考えるとこれほど深い関係性や連動性があるとすれば無視することはできませんね。しかもそれだけではなく、 2018 年 6 月を境に東京湾でクジラの目撃情報 は相次いでいます。クジラが東京湾に入ってくること自体が非常に珍しい現象で、 10 メートル級の巨大なクジラが東京湾の奥までやってくるのは珍しく、偶然迷い込んだのだろうといわれています。。もしかしたら首都直下型地震（南海トラフ地震）と何らかの関係性があるのかもしれません。
しばらくは注意が必要かもしれませんね。クジラに知性がある？。。クジラを研究していく中で驚くべき結果が得られたのでした。クジラには知性が存在していて、社会的にも思いやることができる動物なのです。クジラは何をやるにも仲間とともに行動することが分かったてきています。座礁してしまった仲間を全員で助けに行くため大量のクジラが死んでしまったという事例もあるそうです。これがクジラの大量座礁の原因かもしれませんね。。まとめ 。いかがだったでしょうか？。
