El Silbón is a frightening urban legend told in Venezuela and Colombia in South America.
According to the story, El Silbón was born in Venezuela and was spoiled by his parents from a young age. Because of this, he grew into an arrogant and selfish man. Some versions of the legend also say he showed a disturbing, almost psychopathic side that set him apart from ordinary people.
The Beginning of the Legend
One day, El Silbón told his parents that he wanted to eat venison. When they said they could not prepare deer meat for him, he flew into a rage and got into a fierce argument with his father.
Unable to control his anger, he stabbed his father in the stomach several times with a sharp blade, killing him.
But his shocking actions did not end there. Still obsessed with eating meat, El Silbón dismembered his father’s body himself and handed the flesh to his mother, ordering her to cook it.
At first, his mother had no idea she was preparing the remains of her own husband. She cooked for her son without noticing anything unusual. But as she handled the unfamiliar meat, she began to feel that something was terribly wrong. Following the bloodstains left from where El Silbón had brought it in, she eventually found her husband lying in a horrifying, unrecognizable state.
The Punishment
Naturally, the mother was devastated that her husband had been murdered. But even more than grief, she was overcome by terror at her son’s madness and unnatural cruelty.
Believing El Silbón to be a “child of the devil,” she begged his grandfather to get rid of him. The grandfather then restrained El Silbón in order to punish him for killing his father.
El Silbón was whipped again and again. When he was close to passing out, chili pepper and lemon juice were rubbed into his wounds, causing him unbearable pain.
This punishment continued for days. When he was finally released, his grandfather forced him to carry a bag containing his father’s bones and threw him outside.
At that moment, stray dogs nearby noticed him. The bag held the rotting bones of his father, and the starving dogs attacked El Silbón in an attempt to get at them. As he was unable to escape and was about to be bitten to death, his grandfather recited a spell.
According to the legend, it was a curse of immortality—and a curse that condemned him to wander the earth forever.
The Man with the Bag of Bones
Since then, El Silbón is said to roam the world carrying the bag filled with his father’s bones, counting them as he walks.
At night, he enters houses that catch his attention, takes the bones out of the bag, and begins counting them. It is said that if the family can drive him out before he finishes counting, happiness will come to that household.
But if they fail to force him out before he finishes, the legend says everyone in the house will be killed by him.
A Warning Tale
This is the urban legend of El Silbón, a story still passed down in Venezuela and Colombia today. In some tellings, it is also used as a cautionary tale about the terrible fate that awaits those who commit murder.
