Have you ever heard of tetanus bacteria—or of The Trembling Tongue?
Many people know tetanus as a dangerous infectious disease. The Trembling Tongue, meanwhile, began as a 1975 novel by Taku Miki and was later adapted into a Japanese film.
The Story of The Trembling Tongue
The Trembling Tongue was released in Japan in 1980. Its young heroine, Masako, is playing in the mud when she injures herself on an old nail. That wound becomes the cause of a tetanus infection.
A few days after the injury, Masako begins acting strangely. Her parents take her to a hospital, but at first, they are not taken seriously. Her condition keeps worsening. When she begins biting her own tongue, her parents bring her to a university hospital.
There, they finally learn the truth: Masako has been infected with tetanus.
From that point, her isolated life in the hospital begins. Masako, suffering under the effects of the bacteria, and her parents, forced to watch her deteriorate, are gradually pushed toward emotional collapse. In the film’s ending, Masako eventually recovers and asks for a chocolate bun.
Although the film is set in a hospital and centers on a sick child and her parents, it is said to have been made not as a medical drama, but as a horror film. In that sense, its terror comes not from ghosts or curses, but from illness itself.
The Fear of Tetanus: Not Just Another Infection
Even people who do not know much about medicine or bacteria may have a vague sense that tetanus is “bad news.” Tetanus bacteria belong to the genus Clostridium, and the toxins they produce are considered extremely powerful—sometimes described as among the strongest toxins in the world.
The toxins associated with tetanus include tetanospasmin, a neurotoxin, and tetanolysin, a hemolytic toxin. According to cited medical sources, these toxins can be taken into the nervous system through nerve endings at the neuromuscular junction. They are then said to reach the anterior horn of the spinal cord, cross cell membranes, and even affect the brain.
In The Trembling Tongue, Masako’s suffering is shown in brutal detail: she bites her own tongue, screams, and arches her body during violent muscle spasms caused by the toxin. In the movie, this is a powerful performance by the actress. But symptoms like these are not pure fiction. They can occur in real cases of tetanus.
Tetanus bacteria are said to have survived on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. Once infection develops, the central nervous system is attacked. The disease can become extremely dangerous, and patients may suffer spasms triggered by even slight light or sound.
When people hear “bacterial infection,” they may think of a cold or food poisoning. Tetanus is different. It attacks the human nervous system.
A Horror That Still Exists Close to Us
The frightening thing is that tetanus bacteria are not an old danger sealed away in the past. They still exist around us today.
Tetanus bacteria are said to live in soil. They can also be found in the intestines and feces of animals. A small cut while gardening, a fall on a school field, or a scrape while hiking in the mountains—through ordinary little wounds like these, tetanus bacteria may enter the body.
The risk is considered higher with complex or deep wounds. Redness, swelling, and pain around the injured area may raise concern for infection. Even a small amount of bacteria may be enough to cause infection, and once symptoms develop, the powerful neurotoxin can begin to damage the body.
In other words, this is not only a story from a film. Tetanus infection is a quiet, everyday fear that could potentially affect anyone.
If you are traveling, hiking, gardening, or exploring rural areas in Japan or anywhere else, treat dirty wounds seriously. Clean injuries promptly, avoid ignoring deep or contaminated cuts, and seek medical care if you are concerned.
The Terror of What Cannot Be Seen
Tetanus bacteria are microscopic. At roughly 0.3 to 0.6 micrometers by 3 to 6 micrometers, they cannot be seen with the naked eye.
They are invisible, yet they may live in soil or animal feces. It is possible that the dirt you stepped on today contained tetanus bacteria. Neither the bacteria nor the toxins they produce can be seen.
And yet, once infection takes hold, the central nervous system can be affected. A person may scream as if losing control, harm themselves, and face a disease with a frighteningly high risk. As The Trembling Tongue depicts, the suffering may not stop with the patient. Family members watching from nearby may also be mentally and emotionally worn down.
The fear of having the nervous system attacked—the fear of losing control of your own body—is horrifying. Watching the patient and everyone around them gradually break down is horror in its purest form. And this fear is not limited to the screen. It exists as a risk in everyday life.
Final Thoughts
The Trembling Tongue and tetanus remind us of a terrible kind of fear: a tiny living thing that cannot be seen, yet can threaten a human life once its toxin takes hold.
Losing control of your own body. Watching your family suffer alongside you. Facing an invisible organism that attacks the nerves. Tetanus is a medical reality, but it also carries the atmosphere of true horror.
The Trembling Tongue is a remarkable film, strengthened by the intense performance of its young lead, Mayuko Wakamori, and a strong supporting cast including Tsunehiko Watase, Sachiyo Toake, and Jukichi Uno.

破傷風菌…震える舌…聞いたことがありますか?破傷風菌は、ご存知の方も多いでしょう。感染症を引き起こす細菌です。そして、震える舌は三木卓が1975年に発表した小説とそれを元にして制作された映画です。震える舌のあらすじ。。震える舌は1980年に公開された日本の映画です。主人公の昌子は、どろんこ遊びをするわけですが、このどろんこ遊びの途中で古い釘で怪我をしてしまいます。そして、これが原因で破傷風菌に感染してしまいます。怪我から数日後に昌子の様子がおかしかったので、両親は病院につれていくわけですが最初は取り合ってももらえない…でも、どんどん様子がおかしくなって、自分の舌を噛み始めたので、両親は昌子を大学病院に連れていきます。
そして、そこで 「破傷風菌に感染している」 ことが解るのです。そして、 隔離された生活が始まるわけですが、破傷風菌に犯されている昌子もそして、両親もどんどん心を病んで いきます。映画では、最後には昌子は回復してチョコパンをねだるようになります。この映画は病気になった少女とその両親、そして、舞台は病院ですが医療映画ではなくホラー映画…恐怖映画として作成されたそうです。参考資料 シネマトゥデイ 。破傷風菌の恐ろしさ…ただの風邪とは次元が違う。
。破傷風菌と聞くと「やばい菌だ」ということは医療や細菌に詳しくない人でもなんとなく解りますよね。破傷風菌は、クロストリジウム属の細菌で毒素がとても強く 「世界最強の毒素」 を持っていると言われています。破傷風菌の毒素はテタヌストキシンと呼ばれる神経毒と、テタノリジンと呼ばれる溶血毒 ※1 で、毒素は神 経筋接合部から神経終末膜を介して神経内に取り込まれます 。そして、脊髄前角に到達して細胞膜を通過し 脳にまで達する と言われています。※2 。

破傷風菌は、地球上で数億年にもわたって生き残ってきた細菌で、感染すると 中枢神経を犯していきます 。発症してしまうと 生存率はとても低く、患者さんはわずかな光や音にも反応して発作を引き起こしてしまいます。。細菌感染というと、風邪や食中毒を連想しますが、破傷風菌は人間の神経を犯していくのです。破傷風菌は今も地球上に…私たちのすぐ近くに存在している。恐ろしい神経毒を作り出す破傷風菌ですが、今も 破傷風菌は私たちのすぐそばに生息 しています。
破傷風菌は、 土壌に生息していると言われており、動物の腸の中や糞にも生息 しています。ガーデニングをしていてちょっと手を切ってしまった…とか、校庭でスポーツをしていて転んだとか、山登りをしていてすりむいたとか、そういう日常の中のほんの些細な傷から破傷風菌が身体の中に侵入することがあるのです。。複雑で深い傷のほうがそのリスクが高く、患部の発赤や腫れ、疼痛がある場合には破傷風菌が疑われます。破傷風菌はほんの少しの菌でも感染することがあり、発症すると極めて強い神経毒が身体を蝕んでいきます。
