The Tomioka Kirishitan Memorial Monument, also known as Senninzuka, is rumored to be a haunted site where multiple spirits have been seen.
Visitors have reported various strange phenomena in the area, including the apparition of a woman at the observation deck and unexplained groaning voices that seem to come from nowhere. As with many haunted places in Japan, these stories remain local rumors rather than confirmed events, but they add a dark atmosphere to the site.
Senninzuka is said to be one of three head mounds connected to the Amakusa-Shimabara Rebellion. According to the account associated with the site, the heads of more than 10,000 Kirishitan rebels who died in the uprising are believed to rest among these mounds.
The monument is located at 3645 Tomioka, Reihoku, Amakusa District, Kumamoto Prefecture. If you visit, treat the site as a memorial: be respectful, keep noise down, follow posted rules, and avoid entering restricted areas or visiting in unsafe conditions.
