Omutsu-zuka: A Cursed Mound in a Yamanashi Peach Orchard

What Is Hisaruki? The Unsettling 2channel Urban Legend
目次

English Version

In one corner of a peach orchard stands a small mound that looks as if several Jizo statues have been gathered together. It is said to be dedicated to a woman named Omutsu.

According to local rumors, hitodama—ghostly balls of fire—have been seen there, and some visitors claim that orb-like lights appear in photographs taken near the mound.

The legend says that long ago, a local landowner tried to force himself on Omutsu, but she refused him. In retaliation, he allegedly confined and tortured her, and in the end buried her together with venomous snakes and poisonous insects.

When Omutsu did not return home, her mother went to the landowner’s residence to ask what had happened. She was told that Omutsu had committed an offense and had been cut down as punishment. But after learning the truth, the mother went to the place where her daughter had been buried, scattered a handful of millet seeds, cursed the landowner, and died on the spot.

After that, strange incidents reportedly began occurring around the landowner. Eventually, he killed members of his own household and relatives, then died in madness himself.

Fearing Omutsu’s curse, his descendants built the mound and held memorial rites for her. Even so, near the end of the Meiji era, a violent inheritance dispute broke out within the family, and the line is said to have died out.

The site is associated with 875-9 Iccho Tanaka, Yamanashi City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Because it appears to be in or near farmland, visitors should be careful not to trespass, damage crops, or disturb local residents.
