Lake Tazawa: Akita’s Haunted Lake of Ghostly Rumors

Aesir vs. Vanir: What Sets the Two Tribes of Norse Gods Apart?
目次

English Version

Lake Tazawa in Semboku, Akita Prefecture, is often described as one of the area’s better-known haunted spots. According to local rumors, if you make a full circuit around the lake, a spirit may rise from the water and drag you in.

There is also said to be a ghostly man seen swimming on his back across the surface of the lake.

The stories surrounding Lake Tazawa are not limited to Akita. They are said to have spread as far as neighboring Iwate Prefecture. One reason often given is a dark rumor from the Showa era: that organized crime groups allegedly tied stones to bodies and sank them in the lake.

Lake Tazawa is located around Nishikicho Saimyoji, Semboku City, along Prefectural Route 247. If you visit, enjoy the lake from safe, public areas, follow local rules, and do not enter restricted or dangerous waterside locations.
