Crosses and human bones are still reportedly unearthed at the ruins of Hara Castle. For that reason, the site is sometimes described as one of Japan’s most likely places for ghost stories to take root.
This was the castle where Christian rebels, led by Amakusa Shiro—remembered in legend as a “child of God”—held out during the Shimabara Rebellion, one of the largest uprisings in Japanese history. The rebellion was driven by the persecution of Christians and the burden of heavy taxation.
Despite their desperate resistance, the rebels were ultimately suppressed by the Tokugawa shogunate. Many people were publicly executed as traitors, and their severed heads were put on display.
Some say the grief and resentment from that time never fully left the land. Could those lingering emotions have become earthbound spirits, still tied strongly to this place?

十字架や人骨が今だに発掘される。霊が出る要素は日本でも有数の場所と言われている。キリシタン弾圧、重税により歴史上最大規模の一揆が起きた、島原の乱で神の子と呼ばれた天草四郎率いるキリシタン勢が立て篭もった城。必死に抵抗も虚しく幕府に鎮圧されてしまい、幕府への反乱とし多くの人間が公開処刑され晒し首にされた。その無念の思いが地縛霊となって、今もなお、強くこの場に残り続けているとでも言うのだろうか。長崎県南島原市南有馬町乙４８９
