Have you heard of the urban legend known as the “Black-Eyed Kids,” or BEKs?
As the name suggests, this legend is about eerie children whose eyes are completely black, with no visible whites at all. Horror fans and urban legend collectors may recognize the term, but in Japan it is not nearly as widely known as famous local legends like Hanako-san of the Toilet or Kuchisake-onna, the Slit-Mouthed Woman.
Overseas, however, the Black-Eyed Kids legend has become extremely well known. Sightings and personal accounts have spread across the internet, appeared on television, and become a familiar part of modern paranormal folklore. Despite the word “children,” the stories are often deeply unsettling.
The 1996 Account That Spread Online
Some reports claim that Black-Eyed Kids were first seen in the 1980s, and tabloid reports have also mentioned sightings from that period. In the UK, there are said to be even older accounts.
However, the story that helped the legend spread widely online is usually traced to 1996. That year, American journalist Brian Bethel shared an experience on a mailing list devoted to ghost stories and paranormal topics.
According to his account, Bethel was parked outside a movie theater in Abilene, Texas, writing a check in his car. Two boys knocked on the car window. For reasons he could not explain, he already felt a sense of fear, but he opened the window slightly to hear them out.
The boys said they had come to see a movie but had forgotten their money, and asked him to drive them home.
As he listened, Bethel realized the boys were staring at him with eyes that appeared completely black. Panicked, he quickly closed the window. The children, who had been calm until then, suddenly began pounding on the glass and shouting something like, “Let us in!”
Terrified, Bethel drove away.
This pattern appears again and again in many BEK stories. The children usually do not attack at first. Instead, they politely ask to be allowed into a car or a home. Their reasons often sound ordinary: they need a ride somewhere, they need to use the bathroom, or they need help.
But witnesses describe an unnatural atmosphere. Even after being refused, the children do not leave. Once the person inside notices their completely black eyes and firmly denies the request, the children may suddenly become aggressive.
What happens if someone actually lets them in is still unclear within the legend. Many stories have been posted online, but there are said to be almost no accounts from people who opened the door. For believers in the legend, that silence is part of what makes it so disturbing.
The Legend Became Popular After 2013
Although BEK sightings had been discussed since the late 20th century, the legend seems to have become much more popular on the internet and in media after 2013.
One major reason was the 2012 horror film Sunshine Girl and the Hunt for Black Eyed Kids. Another was the spread of online videos that collected and explained BEK stories, helping introduce the legend to a wider audience.
How Credible Are the Stories?
As with most urban legends, the truth of the Black-Eyed Kids stories is uncertain. Still, many accounts share the same basic structure: the children ask to be let inside, and when they are refused, they become threatening.
Their appearance is also consistent. They are described as children, and their eyes are said to be completely black. Because of this repeated pattern, some paranormal fans feel the stories have a certain eerie plausibility.
If the legend were true, it would suggest that BEKs are not isolated ghosts or one-time apparitions, but a type of paranormal being appearing in multiple places.

皆さんは、 「黒い目の子供たち」という都市伝説 を知っていますか？。black-eyed kids(BEKs) などとも呼ばれ、その名の通り白目の一切ない、 真っ黒な目をした不気味な子供たちにまつわる都市伝説 です。都市伝説に詳しい方ならともかく、普通の人が聞いたところでパッとイメージが浮かんだ方はあまりいないだろうと思います。世間でも有名で、都市伝説といえばこれと言えるほどである「トイレの花子さん」や「口裂け女」などと比べてしまうと、日本ではあまり出回っていない都市伝説なので聞いたことがないという方も多いと思います。
ですが、この 「黒い目の子供たち」 ( 以降 BEKs と表記 ) の都市伝説は、海外では目撃情報も多くインターネットやテレビにも広く出回っているとても有名な都市伝説 なのです。そして何より、子供たちという言葉からは想像出来ないような、身も毛もよだつほどの恐ろしい内容です。今回は、その BEKs について話していこうと思います。ネットに広まったきっかけは 1996 年の目撃情報 。。初めて BEKs が目撃されたのは 1980 年代であるとの情報も大衆紙の報道で発表されており、またイギリスではそれ以前の目撃情報もあったとされています。
しかし、インターネットでこの都市伝説が広く出回るようになったきっかけは、 1996 年にアメリカのジャーナリストであるブライアン・ペテル氏が怪談関係のメーリングリストに書いた体験談 であるとされています。その体験談の内容がこちらです。ペテル氏が体験談を書いた同年 1996 年、テキサス州アビリーンの映画館の前で車を止めて小切手を書いていると、車の窓をノックする 2 人の男の子がいた。何故かこの時点で多少の恐怖を感じつつ、窓を開けて話を聞いていると、映画を見に来たがお金を忘れてしまったので家まで送ってほしいとのこと。
しかし、 話を聞く途中で彼らがその真っ黒に塗りつぶされた目で自分を見つめている ことに気付き、慌てて窓を閉めた。すると、それまで大人しかった子供たちは突然窓を叩きだし、「開けろ！」というような内容のことを叫び出した。激しい恐怖を覚えたペテル氏は、そのまま車を出して逃げたという。この体験談のとおり、一般的に目撃されている BEKs というのは最初から何かをしてくるわけではなく、 まずは丁寧な言葉で車や家に入れてほしいと頼むのです。その理由は様々で、「車でどこかに送ってほしい」「トイレを貸してほしい」など真っ当な理由。
。しかし、中にいる者が何度優しく断っても引かない異様な雰囲気や、その黒で塗りつぶされた目に気づき要求をきっぱりと断ると突然暴れ出すのだそうです。また、 BEKs の要求に応えてしまった場合、中にいる者がどうなってしまうかは未だ不明ですが、多くの目撃情報や体験談がインターネット上に投稿される中で、一つとして「ドアを開けてしまった」という話が出ていないことから、開けてしまった人がどうなるのか。・・・答えは一つではないでしょうか？。BEKs が本格的にインターネットに広まったのは 2013 年以降 。
。このように BEKs に関する目撃情報は 1900 年代からいくつも報告さていましたが、本格的にインターネット、テレビなどのメディアでこの都市伝説が流行したのは 2013 年からのことでした。流行した理由は 2012 年の BEKs をテーマにしたホラー映画である「 Sunshine Girl and the Hunt for Black Eyed Kids 」の上映や、 BEKs についての情報をまとめた動画が MNS に投稿されたことが大きい理由のようです。
都市伝説の信憑性について 。。BEKs に関する大半の体験談が、 条件や様子に違いはあっても核心的な部分が「中に入れて欲しいと頼む」「断ると暴れ出す」という内容で統一されている ため話には それなりの信憑性がある と言えます。容姿に関しても、 「目が黒目だけである」「子供である」 と、 BEKs の名の通りの目撃情報であり、例外は報告されていないことから、もしこの都市伝説が真実であれば BEKs は一つの超常的存在であり世界には多くその種族の子供が存在しているのだと予想されます。
