Shakujii Park in Nerima, Tokyo, is one of the ward’s best-known leisure spots. It has abundant greenery, historic remains, and a long-standing place in local pop culture, including as the setting associated with the manga and anime series The Gutsy Frog. Loved by Tokyo residents and visitors alike, the park is home to two large ponds: Sanpoji Pond and Shakujii Pond.
Among locals, however, Sanpoji Pond has another reputation. It is sometimes spoken of as one of Tokyo’s notable haunted spots, tied to a sorrowful legend from the fall of Shakujii Castle and the death of a young woman known as Princess Teruhime.
The history of Shakujii Park and Sanpoji Pond
Shakujii Park is located in Nerima Ward, Tokyo. Its two large ponds, Shakujii Pond and Sanpoji Pond, are known alongside Inokashira Pond and Zenpukuji Pond as part of the so-called Three Great Spring-Fed Ponds of Musashino.
During the Muromachi period, the Toshima clan used these spring waters and built Shakujii Castle nearby. The castle ruins still remain today.
The modern Shakujii Park was developed in 1959 around these ponds. With two baseball fields and scenery that changes beautifully with the seasons, it remains a popular urban retreat. Events are still held there, and the park has also appeared in various films, dramas, and manga.
One well-known pop culture connection is The Gutsy Frog. Another local anecdote says that Kazutoshi Sakurai, vocalist of Mr. Children, came up with lyrics for the hit song “Tomorrow Never Knows” while jogging in Shakujii Park.
In 1996, “the sounds of birds, water, and trees at Sanpoji Pond” were reportedly selected by Japan’s Environment Agency as one of the 100 Soundscapes of Japan to Preserve. As a strange side note, around 1993 there were repeated reports of sightings of a giant crocodile or alligator in the area, causing a small local stir. In the end, it seems nothing was ever found.
Despite its image as a beloved leisure spot, Shakujii Park—especially the Sanpoji Pond side—is also known among some locals as a haunted place. For that reason, it is said that many people from the area avoid going near Sanpoji Pond at night.
The legend of Princess Teruhime
Sanpoji Pond is connected to a tragic local legend.
As mentioned above, the Toshima clan built Shakujii Castle during the Muromachi period. But in 1477, the clan was defeated in battle by Ota Dokan, a retainer of the Uesugi family, and Shakujii Castle fell.
According to the legend, the clan leader Toshima Yasutsune took his own life by drowning himself in Sanpoji Pond after the castle’s fall. His daughter, Princess Teruhime, is then said to have followed him into the water.
It is this sorrowful story of Teruhime that some people believe lies behind the eerie experiences reported around Sanpoji Pond centuries later.
Ghost stories from Sanpoji Pond
Many of the ghost stories told about Sanpoji Pond are connected to Princess Teruhime, or at least to the image of a woman near the water.
People have claimed to see a woman’s ghost rising on the surface of the pond. Others say they heard the sound of someone climbing out of the water while they were walking nearby. Some have reported footsteps crunching on gravel behind them, only to turn around and find no one there.
There are also stories of a vague human-shaped figure entering the pond, and of strange figures appearing in photos taken around Sanpoji Pond.
One reported sighting, however, sounds more modern than medieval: a woman with long black hair, wearing a white one-piece dress, smiling eerily and beckoning. Since that image does not seem to match a Muromachi-period princess, some have speculated—purely as a rumor—that it could be the spirit of a modern woman who drowned there, perhaps pulled in by Teruhime.
Whether or not one believes the ghost stories, the Sanpoji Pond side of Shakujii Park is dense and shadowy in places. At night, it can feel unsettling even without any belief in the supernatural. Travelers should use common sense: stay on public paths, follow park rules, avoid unsafe areas after dark, and do not enter restricted zones or approach the water carelessly.
A strange death in January 2019
There is also a more recent and very real incident connected to Shakujii Park.
In the early hours of January 22, 2019, a body was found in Sanpoji Pond. An elderly man was discovered floating face down about 15 meters from the bank.
Was it an accident, suicide, homicide, or something else? The reports referenced here do not go further. Still, for those who know the legends surrounding the pond, the incident added another dark layer to Sanpoji Pond’s reputation.
Shakujii Park remains a public park and a popular place to visit in Tokyo, especially during the day. But among Tokyo’s many rumored haunted locations—such as Hachioji Castle Ruins, Prudential Tower, Ueno Park, Sendagaya Tunnel, and even Roppongi Hills—Sanpoji Pond continues to stand out for its mix of history, folklore, and quiet unease.

もしかしたら、 照姫に引きずり込まれて溺れ死んだ現代の女性 なのかもしれません……。実際、石神井公園の中でも三宝寺池側は鬱蒼としているので、 夜は霊感がなくても不気味に感じる と思います。【2019年1月】石神井公園で起こった変死事件。 石神井公園 最後に、現代に起こったある事実―― 変死事件 について紹介したいと思います。
