English Version

In the first part, we gave a broad overview of the events leading up to the founding of the Kingdom of Israel. That ancient Israelite history is essential for understanding the Japan-Jewish common ancestry theory, so please bear with a little repetition.

After the era of Moses passed to Joshua, the twelve tribes of Israel established themselves in Palestine and founded the Kingdom of Israel. Around 1000 BCE, the tribes attempted to unify all the Israelites. The first leader chosen was Saul, a war hero, but he fell from power because of his arrogance. The next to be chosen was the famous David.

David had been a young shepherd, but he succeeded in uniting the Israelites, creating what is known as the United Kingdom of Israel. The kingdom reached its greatest prosperity under David’s son, Solomon. The construction of the massive First Temple, replacing the earlier movable sanctuary with a permanent one, symbolized cultural growth and national power.

At the same time, ordinary people were growing resentful of heavy taxes and forced labor. These tensions became one of the causes of rebellion. In the generation of Solomon’s son, Jeroboam of the tribe of Ephraim rose up against the royal line.

This civil conflict split the united kingdom after only about eighty years. The result was the Northern Kingdom of Israel and the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

The Northern Kingdom was formed by the ten tribes that supported Jeroboam. The Southern Kingdom was formed by the tribe of Judah, the tribe of Benjamin, and part of the tribe of Levi, who supported Solomon’s son. The capital of the Northern Kingdom was Samaria, while the capital of the Southern Kingdom was Jerusalem.

According to the Old Testament, the original faith was centered on the one God, Yahweh. However, the ten tribes of the Northern Kingdom are said to have turned toward idol worship, including golden calf images.

Prophets were sent as messengers of God, but the faith of the Northern Kingdom reportedly went beyond idol worship and began to include foreign gods as well. In this telling, the teachings of the ancient Hebrew religion had already been lost.

The Southern Kingdom of Judah continued to worship Yahweh. But in 722 BCE, about two centuries after the split, the Northern Kingdom of Israel fell to the Assyrian Empire, which had been expanding its power in Mesopotamia. During this war, nearly 30,000 people from the noble class of the northern ten tribes were taken away to Assyria, in what is sometimes referred to as the captivity of Nineveh.

The Southern Kingdom of Judah witnessed this disaster, but 135 years later it made a similar mistake and was destroyed by the Babylonian Empire. Its people were taken captive to Babylonia in the event known as the Babylonian Captivity.

This is where the mystery of the Lost Ten Tribes begins.

In 538 BCE, the Neo-Babylonian Empire, successor to the Babylonian power that had destroyed the Southern Kingdom, was itself conquered by the Persian Empire. At last, the two tribes of the Southern Kingdom were allowed to return to their homeland of Jerusalem.

These returning people, ancestors of those now known as Jews, went back to Palestine, rebuilt the Temple, and established a new form of Judaism under strict religious laws.

By that time, the Assyrian Empire that had carried away the ten tribes of the Northern Kingdom had also collapsed. Yet those tribes did not return to the sacred land of Palestine. After the fall of Assyria, they no longer appeared clearly in history.

Some theories suggest that a portion of them may have returned. Even so, of the twelve Israelite tribes, the whereabouts of nearly all ten northern tribes became unknown. This is the mystery of the Lost Ten Tribes, and it is also the point that connects the story to the Japan-Jewish common ancestry theory.

In short, one argument used by supporters of the theory is that some, or even all, of the ten tribes that vanished from recorded history eventually reached Japan.

Of course, the theory is not usually presented as simply, “They disappeared from history, so they may have gone to Japan.” Instead, it is often discussed through supposed similarities in culture, customs, and rituals between Japan and the Jewish or ancient Israelite people. These claims remain speculative and are not accepted as established history, but they have long attracted curiosity.

One related source often mentioned is the apocryphal text known as 2 Esdras. According to that account, the vanished ten tribes entered the region beyond the Euphrates River so that they would not repeat their past sins. This would correspond broadly to parts of western Asia, including areas of present-day Iraq, Syria, and Turkey.

There are also theories similar to the Japan-Jewish ancestry theory in other countries. One example is British Israelism, which claims that some of the ten tribes traveled toward the Mediterranean and became ancestors of the British people.

Whether viewed as religious lore, speculative history, or occult-flavored mystery, the Lost Ten Tribes remain one of the strange crossroads where ancient scripture, national identity, and modern legend meet.
