Old Obako Tunnel is a rumored haunted spot in Sounkyo, Kamikawa, Hokkaido, along the Daisetsu National Highway.
Before the tunnel, on a nearby bridge, people have reportedly seen the ghost of a man whose body appears translucent.
Inside the tunnel, there is a Jizo statue. According to local rumor, a person who played a prank on the Jizo later went missing.
The tunnel is also said to have been dug by forced laborers. One rumor claims that workers who collapsed from exhaustion were turned into hitobashira—“human pillars”—and buried inside the tunnel walls.
Near the center of the tunnel stands a large Jizo, believed to have been placed there as a memorial or to comfort the spirits of the dead.
If you visit the Sounkyo area, check current access conditions and local restrictions. Stay in permitted areas, and never enter closed, unstable, or unsafe tunnels.
