Along the Oiwake Soran Line in Nagaiso, Taisei-ku, Setana, Hokkaido, there is a coastal formation known as Mammoth Rock. Among campers and horror fans, it has picked up a grim reputation.
People who camp in the area are said to hear footsteps when no one is there. Others claim that a young woman’s voice suddenly cries out, saying things like “Run!” There is also a rumor that protective paper talismans have been placed somewhere inside the rock.
The stories are tied to real danger as well as local fear. During the Southwest Hokkaido Earthquake, a young person who had come to camp in the area reportedly went missing and has never been found. It is also said that, almost every year, at least one angler falls from the rocks and drowns.
According to the darker version of the rumor, even wearing a life jacket does not guarantee safety—something is said to drag people into the water regardless. Whether taken as a ghost story or a warning about the sea, the atmosphere around Mammoth Rock is heavy.
If you visit this coastline, treat it as a hazardous natural area, not just a haunted spot. Stay on safe public paths, avoid rough weather and high waves, do not climb unstable rocks, and never enter restricted or private areas.
