Ninoshima: Hiroshima Bay’s Island of Wartime Ghost Stories

Crustal Tsunamis: The World-Ending Wave That Could Leave Nowhere Safe

English Version

Ninoshima, an island in Hiroshima Bay, has long been linked to unsettling rumors.

At one lodging facility on the island, people say that after midnight, the sound of many footsteps can be heard coming from the hallway. Some also claim to hear the sound of a bugle in the darkness.

There is another story about a certain mountain on the island. According to the rumor, some people who climb it may be possessed by spirits and collapse unconscious on the spot.

Ninoshima is also tied to the tragedy of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. It is said that people who jumped into the rivers to escape the pain of their burns and the intense heat lost their lives, and that some of them were carried by the currents to this island. Because of the way the currents move in Hiroshima Bay, floating objects—including, at times, human remains—are said to drift toward Ninoshima even today.

There are reportedly many people who have had strange experiences here. Whether one believes the stories or not, Ninoshima is not a place to visit lightly or as a joke.

Location noted in the source: 648 Ninoshima-cho, Minami Ward, Hiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture. If you visit, stay on public paths, respect private property and restricted areas, and remember that this island is connected to real wartime loss.
