The abandoned hospital site at the former Yubetsu Coal Mine is said to be one of the area’s most unsettling spots. Many visitors have reported strange spiritual phenomena there. According to local rumors, people who are especially sensitive to spirits have even fainted, while others who claim no special sensitivity have experienced dizziness, chills, or sudden headaches. Some believers describe the feeling as if something has attached itself to them.
Yubetsu Coal Mine operated until around 1970. Because it was located in Kushiro City, it has also been referred to as the Kushiro Coal Mine. In its prime, it was one of Japan’s leading coal-producing areas.
The mining town once had the facilities of a small city: schools, a hospital, public buildings, movie theaters, other entertainment, and even railway access. Its population is said to have exceeded 10,000 people.
But coal mining was always dangerous. As mining accidents became more frequent, residents gradually moved away, leaving behind the traces of a once-thriving town.
The site is associated with Akan-cho Yubetsu 22-sen, Kushiro City, Hokkaido, near Hokkaido Route 667. If you visit the area, do not enter abandoned structures, restricted zones, or unstable ruins. View from safe, legal public areas and follow all local signs and rules.

炭鉱の病院跡は霊的現象が多数目撃されている。霊感の強い人は気絶してしまう事も。霊感のない人でも、めまいや寒気を感じたり頭痛に襲われることも珍しくない。霊に取り憑かれていると言えるだろう。1970年頃まで存在していた炭鉱で、釧路市にあったことから釧路炭鉱とも呼ばれている。当時は国内屈指の石炭産出地だった。周辺には学校・病院などの公共施設や映画館などの娯楽施設もあり、交通手段も鉄道があり、人口は1万人を越えていたという。しかし炭鉱には常に危険もつきものであり、炭鉱事故が多くなり住人は次第に去っていった。
