Introduction

When people write about Nazi Germany or Adolf Hitler, misunderstandings can happen quickly. Some readers assume that discussing the Nazis means defending them, or that saying Hitler was a complex historical figure means saying he did nothing wrong. In more extreme cases, people begin repeating claims that the Holocaust never happened, or that the gas chambers did not exist.

Those claims are false. The Holocaust against the Jewish people under Nazi rule is a historical fact, and millions of Jews were murdered under the Nazi regime.

Japan also carries its own devastating memory of World War II. It is widely known as the only country in the world to have suffered atomic bombings in war. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed tens of thousands of civilians in an instant. Depending on how one defines the word, the author argues that this, too, can be understood as a mass killing of civilians and a grave wartime atrocity. Attacks on noncombatants are a serious issue in the history of war crimes.

I have written many articles about Nazi Germany and Hitler, but that does not mean I defend Nazi war crimes or Hitler himself. With that made clear, this article looks at the Holocaust carried out by Nazi Germany and asks readers to face the facts directly.

The False Claim That the Holocaust Was Fabricated

Holocaust denial and attempts to minimize Nazi crimes began appearing more openly in the 1960s. Some versions deny the Holocaust entirely. Others admit that persecution occurred but try to reduce the number of victims. To this day, these denialist and so-called revisionist claims have not been accepted as valid by serious historical research.

The French historian Pierre Vidal-Naquet famously compared Holocaust deniers to someone claiming the moon is made of Roquefort cheese, and asking an astrophysicist to debate it. His point was that Holocaust denial operates outside the level of serious scholarship.

Common denialist claims include the idea that the Nazi plan known as the Final Solution of the Jewish Question meant only deporting Jews to Eastern Europe; that gas chambers did not exist; that the figure of five to six million Jewish deaths is exaggerated and that the real number was closer to 100,000; that Hitler and Germany were not primarily responsible for World War II; that Jews themselves were somehow responsible; that the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, not Nazi Germany, was humanity’s greatest enemy in the 1930s and 1940s; or that the Holocaust was invented by the Allies, Jews, or Zionists.

These are the kinds of claims generally associated with Holocaust denial. The most important points are the interpretation of the Final Solution, whether gas chambers existed, and the actual number of victims. The following sections look at what is historically confirmed.

The Final Solution of the Jewish Question

Many deniers misrepresent the Final Solution as if it simply meant expelling Jews eastward. In the earliest phase of Nazi policy, German Jews were used as scapegoats. The regime exploited resentment related to finance and social anxiety, combining Aryan supremacist ideology with antisemitism. Jews inside Germany were increasingly oppressed.

One of the first concrete measures against Jews under Nazi rule was forced emigration or expulsion.

In 1935, the Nuremberg Laws were enacted. At that time, the legal definition of who counted as Jewish still had to be clarified. Interior Minister Wilhelm Frick explained that being Jewish was not defined only by religion, but by ancestry, race, and blood. In other words, even people who did not practice Judaism could be classified as Jewish by the Nazi state.

This racial definition allowed the Nazis to target German Jews as a group regardless of religious belief. One consequence was the violent antisemitic attacks of 1938 known as Kristallnacht, when Jewish shops, homes, and synagogues were attacked.

The following year, in 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland. There were about 3.3 million Polish Jews, and the Nazis applied the same racial category to them as well. At this stage, Nazi policy still centered heavily on expulsion. But by around 1940, Jewish ghettos had grown rapidly, and SS control over food distribution helped create catastrophic conditions. Disease and starvation spread through overcrowded ghettos. By around 1941, hundreds of thousands of Jews confined in ghettos had died from these conditions.

This was before the full-scale intentional killing program reached its later form.

Mass Shootings and Poison Gas

In 1941, with the beginning of the war against the Soviet Union, Nazi authorities authorized the shooting of people they described as security threats in occupied eastern territories, including Jews. This became a state-directed mission for mobile killing units under the SS and security police.

Roughly five million Jews lived in Soviet territories that came under threat as the German army advanced. From this point, Nazi Germany moved from a policy centered on expulsion toward direct mass murder. Jews were lined up and shot in large numbers. The SS was not the only organization involved; German police battalions, the Wehrmacht, and other units also participated in or supported these actions.

This mass murder policy did not apply in exactly the same way to all European Jews, which led to the development of systematic killing using poison gas.

The figure most often associated with this policy is Heinrich Himmler, the powerful and notorious head of the SS. The gas killings at Auschwitz are among the best-known examples, but they were part of a wider system of murder and experimentation. In concentration and extermination camps, Jews were killed by injections, carbon monoxide, vehicle exhaust, shooting, starvation, disease, forced labor, and poison gas.

One substance used in gas chambers was Zyklon B, a pesticide also used for delousing. It released hydrogen cyanide gas. Victims forced into sealed gas chambers were killed as the gas spread through the room.

Deniers have claimed that Zyklon B was too expensive, that it was unsuitable as a killing method, or that the structure of the gas chambers makes no sense. Much of this line of argument was popularized by the so-called Leuchter Report, produced in 1988 by American engineer Fred A. Leuchter. He entered Auschwitz without official authorization, took samples, and argued that the walls and ceilings lacked the chemical traces he expected.

The Leuchter Report has been widely discredited. Its methods were not accepted as reliable, and its conclusions do not overturn the overwhelming historical evidence for gas chambers and mass murder.

From 1942, Operation Reinhard organized the deportation of Jews, especially in occupied Poland, to extermination camps and managed the operation of those camps. These extermination camps became the final stage of the Holocaust against the Jews: forced labor, shootings, poison gas, hunger, disease, and death by any method the Nazi system used.

Extermination Policy and the Camps

The Final Solution was discussed at the Wannsee Conference in January 1942. Nazi officials discussed what to do with roughly 11 million European Jews. Forced labor was mentioned as a practical issue, but many Nazi leaders no longer saw Jews as a workforce to be used and preserved. The murder of Jews was also part of the reality behind the policy, even when the most explicit language was often left out of official minutes. Later testimony and the actions that followed make the meaning clear.

After the Wannsee Conference, extermination camps such as Sobibor, Treblinka, and Belzec became central to the killing program. Deportations and forced transfers were carried out for the purpose of extermination.

In July 1942, Himmler ordered the deportation of all Jews in the General Government by the end of the year, including Jews who had been working in military-related industries. At the same time, Jews from across Europe were sent to camps. By 1943, the last major Jewish ghettos in Poland were being liquidated. Some skilled workers were sent to concentration camps. The majority were sent to extermination camps.

The scenes often shown in films, where Jewish families are torn apart on arrival, reflect this selection process. People were judged according to whether the Nazis considered them capable of labor. There was no human feeling in this process. SS units and other men under Himmler’s command selected people forcibly and mechanically.

At the same time, older concentration camps such as Dachau and others took in more foreign prisoners, including Soviet prisoners of war. Many Jews died from overwork and disease during forced labor. Those considered unable to work were shot, gassed, or killed by other methods.

As camp populations increased, shootings became common in extermination centers as well. Given the scale and documentation of these camps, the claim that only around 100,000 Jews were killed is not serious historical analysis. It is fantasy-level distortion.

The main period of Nazi killing of Jews is generally understood as running from around September 1939 to March 1945. The killing stretched across a vast area: north to Finland, east into Soviet territory, Lithuania, Estonia, and other regions, west to France, and south to Greece. Poland was at the center of the catastrophe. Estimates indicate that around three million Jews were murdered in Poland alone.

The Question of Hitler’s Direct Orders

No formal written order from Hitler explicitly saying to exterminate the Jews has been confirmed. Much of the process appears to have involved proposals and methods developed by men below him, such as Heinrich Himmler and senior SS officials, which Hitler approved.

However, the Hitler regime often avoided leaving direct written orders, especially for major or sensitive operations. Investigations of Nazi officials after the war made clear that important instructions were often given orally. For that reason, it is a serious mistake to claim that Hitler had nothing to do with the Holocaust.

Hitler also spoke publicly in speeches about the destruction or annihilation of Jews. He was, without question, a gifted and dangerous speaker. Those who worshiped him could hear those words and then begin thinking about how to carry them out. That was part of the abnormal machinery of the Nazi state.

In other words, even if the Holocaust did not always unfold as a perfectly ordered plan from a single written document, there is no reasonable doubt that Nazi Germany, as a state, carried out the Holocaust, with Jews as its central victims.

Closing Thoughts

Today, the internet is full of claims that historical events were fabricated. When judging such claims, each person needs to examine evidence carefully and responsibly.

There are cases where I personally believe accusations of fabrication may be worth considering. But the Holocaust carried out by Nazi Germany is not one of them. A vast body of evidence confirms that it happened.

The Holocaust was a crime against humanity. The author also views Japan’s experience as the only country subjected to atomic bombings in war as part of the same larger moral horror of attacks on civilians. Japan must also remember that it was allied with Nazi Germany during World War II.

At the same time, records show that many Jewish refugees came to Japan, and that there were real people who risked their lives to help Jewish refugees escape to safety.

Future articles on this site may continue to examine Nazi Germany, Hitler, and related occult or historical themes. They should be read with these facts in mind. If you visit Holocaust memorials, former camp sites, or war museums while traveling, treat them as places of mourning and history: follow official rules, stay on marked paths, and never trespass or treat them as horror attractions.
