The Illuminati cards are a type of card game—but according to some rumors, they are not just a game. They have been called “cards that predict the future” and even “the devil’s prophecy cards.”
So what exactly are the Illuminati cards?
Originally, They Were Just a Game
The Illuminati card game was first released in 1982. The detailed rules are not the focus here, but in simple terms, players absorb smaller organizations into their own organization. Once a player controls a certain number of groups, they win.
The game was inspired by The Illuminatus! Trilogy, a series of novels published in 1975 by Robert Anton Wilson and Robert Shea.
If that were the whole story, the Illuminati cards would simply be a strange, surreal card game. But what made them famous in occult circles was not only the gameplay—it was the artwork.
Why People Call Them “Prophecy Cards”
Each Illuminati card has an illustration. Over time, some people began to claim that certain images looked eerily similar to real events and disasters that happened later.
Rumors often point to cards said to resemble:
- The September 11 terrorist attacks
- Nuclear accidents
- Tsunamis
- The Gulf War
Since the game was created in 1982, these events—including 9/11, the Great East Japan Earthquake, the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, and later nuclear accidents—did occur after the cards were made. That timing is one reason the rumors continue to spread.
Of course, resemblance does not prove prediction. Still, it is true that some cards have enough visual similarities to real-world events that many people find them unsettling.
Rumors Connected to Tokyo and Japan
Some people also believe the Illuminati cards predict events that have not happened yet.
One commonly discussed example is a card showing a collapsing clock tower. Some say the tower resembles the clock tower of Wako in Ginza, Tokyo. Because of that, certain conspiracy theorists interpret it as a prophecy of a major earthquake directly beneath the Tokyo metropolitan area.
Others have focused on the colors of the clothing worn by people in the illustration, claiming they resemble the five Olympic colors. This has led some to wonder whether the card was connected to the Tokyo Olympics in some way.
There have also been claims that another card, showing a city with buildings collapsing, resembles a building in Yokohama. Other rumors mention nuclear attacks, and some even claim there is a card suggesting that Japan will sink.
If you visit Ginza or Yokohama to see these areas for yourself, stick to public spaces, follow local rules, and do not enter private property or restricted buildings.
Coincidence, Pattern, or Something Else?
There are said to be around 500 or more Illuminati cards. Whether any of them truly predict the future, or whether people are simply finding patterns after the fact, is something no one can prove.
The Illuminati cards began as a card game based on a novel. But because some illustrations later appeared to resemble major real-world incidents, they became known in occult and conspiracy communities as “prophecy cards” or “devil cards.”
Because the game itself is themed around secret organizations, some people have also tried to connect it with Freemasonry or the historical Illuminati.
These kinds of conspiracy theories and occult rumors exist as a form of subculture. In the case of the Illuminati cards, believers argue that some of the images are too similar to actual incidents to dismiss completely.
If a hidden organization were secretly influencing major events in history, it is not impossible to imagine that its predictions could have affected something like the Illuminati cards. But that remains speculation.
It is also important to remember that the deck includes cards with obviously unrealistic scenes, such as monsters destroying cities. With more than 500 cards in existence, it is difficult to claim that every card is a prophecy.
Are They Connected to Freemasonry or the Real Illuminati?
Freemasonry is often mentioned in connection with the Illuminati cards, but there is no clear reason to assume a direct connection.
Freemasonry is commonly associated with the principle of fraternity, while the Illuminati cards were originally a commercial card game. From that perspective, it is more reasonable to treat them as unrelated.
It is true that a secret society called the Illuminati once existed in Germany. However, that group was apparently created for the free pursuit of knowledge and learning. Prophecy and card games appear to be entirely separate matters.
The historical Illuminati is often described as having goals related to world unity or world order, which does not necessarily match Freemasonry’s ideals. And if a secret society with a goal of world unification truly possessed the power of prophecy, one might expect that goal to have been achieved long ago.
For these reasons, the Illuminati cards do not appear to have any solid connection to Freemasonry or to the historical Illuminati as a real secret society.
Can You Still Buy Illuminati Cards?
Although the Illuminati cards are sometimes called prophecy cards or devil cards, they were originally just a secret-organization-themed card game based on a novel. They are not inherently supernatural objects.
It is still possible to buy Illuminati cards today, though genuine versions can be somewhat expensive. There are also decks called Tarot Illuminati, but those are different from the original Illuminati card game.

。。イルミナティカードと関係があるのでは？と言われることが多い フリーメイソン ですが、フリーメイソンの基本理念が「友愛」であることや、そもそもイルミナティカードはカードゲームだったことを考えると、関係はないと見るのが妥当でしょう。イルミナティという秘密結社がドイツに存在したのも事実ですが、 イルミナティは学問を自由に学ぶための秘密結社で、予言やカードゲームは全くの別物 のようです。イルミナティの目的は、世界統一でしたのでフリーメイソンの「友愛」とは相容れませんし、世界統一を目的にしている秘密結社が予言の力を持っていれば、とっくに世界統一は果たされているはず…。
