Suzugamori Execution Grounds: A Haunted Edo-Era Site in Shinagawa, Tokyo

Three Deadly Yokai from Japanese Folklore You’d Never Want to Meet
目次

English Version

Suzugamori Execution Grounds is the site of a former execution ground from the Edo period. Because of its history, it is said that many of the spirits reported here appear dressed in kimono.

One of the most unsettling rumors centers on a well known as the “neck-washing well.” According to local stories, severed heads are said to appear floating there.

The execution ground was established in 1651 and closed in 1871. Over those 220 years, it is said that somewhere between 100,000 and 200,000 criminals were executed at this site.

Several well-known figures are also said to have met their end here, including Hirai Gonpachi, Ten’ichibo, and Yaoya Oshichi.

The site is located at 2-7-3 Minami-Oi, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo. If you visit, treat the area as a historic and memorial site: stay in public areas, follow posted rules, and be respectful of the surroundings.
