Ueno Onshi Park is a public park in Taito City, Tokyo. Today, it is known as a relaxing place for locals and travelers, with museums, art galleries, and Ueno Zoo gathered around its grounds.
But this famous sightseeing area is also known in ghost-story circles as one of Tokyo’s haunted spots, with many reported paranormal rumors and eerie experiences attached to it. Here is the history behind Ueno Park, followed by one unsettling story said to have happened there.
The History of Ueno Park
The third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, established Toeizan Kan’eiji Temple in Ueno to protect Edo Castle from the unlucky northeast direction, known in traditional belief as the “demon gate.”
Another reason sometimes given is that the temple was meant to rival the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Either way, the origins of Kan’eiji clearly include a spiritual and symbolic purpose.
Because Kan’eiji was protected by the Edo shogunate, it prospered for a long time. However, after events such as Commodore Perry’s arrival, Japan fell into a period of great upheaval. The authority of the Edo shogunate gradually declined, and in 1876, with the famous Taisei Hokan, political power was returned to the Imperial Court.
Just when it seemed the Edo shogunate had reached its end, forces loyal to the old regime organized soldiers of their own. In 1868, the Battle of Ueno broke out between the new government forces, mainly from Satsuma and Choshu, and the Shogitai.
The Shogitai were defeated. The battlefield was left in a terrible condition, with bodies and remains reportedly abandoned where they had fallen.
Later, there were plans to build a hospital on the devastated land of Ueno. However, Dr. Bauduin, a Dutch military doctor, proposed that the area be made into a park instead, and his idea was accepted.
Ueno Park opened in 1876. It is also said to be one of the first public parks created in Japan.
A Scary Story from Ueno Park
This is a frightening story someone says they experienced in Ueno Park.
Before going to work, running in Ueno Park was part of my daily routine. The park in the early morning, just as the sunrise was beginning, was still dim and quiet. The air felt clean, and it was the perfect place to run.
One morning, as usual, I was jogging through the park while listening to music through my earphones. That was when I saw a strange woman.
She looked to be in her 40s. She had a heavy build, greasy hair, and worn-out, shapeless clothes.
What made her strange was what she was doing. She would make a motion as if placing something at the base of a tree, then put her hands together as if praying. After that, she would move to another tree and repeat the same action.
The behavior itself was hard to understand. I could not see her face, but instinctively I felt that I did not want to get close to her.
I changed my route slightly, taking a wider path so I could keep as much distance as possible while passing by.
That was the only time I ever saw the woman. I had almost forgotten about her completely until something happened later.
When cherry blossom season arrives, Ueno Park becomes packed every day with people holding flower-viewing parties. The company where I worked also held a hanami party in Ueno Park every year.
On the day of the party, I arrived at Ueno Park a little late because of work.
As I walked through the crowded park, full of cherry blossom visitors, the sound of an ambulance siren made me stop. A short while later, I saw paramedics hurrying through the park with a stretcher.
I followed their direction with my eyes and saw a crowd of people gathered around something.
At the center of the crowd, someone had collapsed, and the paramedics were calling out to them.
I caught my breath.
It was at the base of the same tree where that strange woman had placed something and pressed her hands together.
I told myself it was probably just a coincidence. Still, it felt unsettling.
Some time after the cherry blossoms had fallen, I was out for my usual morning run again. That was when I noticed that one tree had been surrounded with yellow tape.
I spoke to one of the park maintenance workers I sometimes saw and asked why the tape had been put up.
They told me, “Yesterday, a branch broke and hit a girl on the head. It’s dangerous, so the area is off-limits.”
The reason I had gone out of my way to ask was because that tree, too, was one of the trees where the strange woman had put her hands together.
Maybe I was overthinking it.
But to me, it did not feel unrelated to the way that woman had placed something at the roots of the trees and prayed.
I could not shake the feeling that she had been sowing the seeds of misfortune.
Visiting Ueno Park Safely
Ueno Park is a real, popular public park and major sightseeing area in Tokyo. If you visit, enjoy the museums, shrines, zoo, and seasonal scenery respectfully. Do not enter taped-off or restricted areas, and be especially careful around trees, construction zones, and crowded hanami areas.
