Hotel Katsugyo, also known as the Yui Grand Hotel, is one of Chiba Prefecture’s most famous haunted spots. It has been featured many times on TV and in books, so horror fans in Japan may already know the name.
Abandoned buildings that are collapsing into ruin often attract ghost stories, but the reason Hotel Katsugyo is feared so widely is the brutal murder case that took place there in 2004. Even before that incident, there were rumors of earlier trouble at the site, including a stabbing involving guests and a guest suicide. Those older stories, however, remain unconfirmed.
From love hotel to seafood restaurant
The strange mismatch between the fairy-tale, castle-like ruin and the name “Katsugyo,” meaning “live fish,” comes from the building’s unusual history.
Hotel Katsugyo originally opened in Togane City, Chiba Prefecture, in the late 1970s as a love hotel called the Yui Grand Hotel. In 1995, the building was converted into a fresh seafood restaurant while keeping much of the old love hotel structure intact.
The restaurant reportedly served fish brought in from local fishing ports, kept alive in tanks, and prepared as fresh seafood dishes. Guests ate in private rooms that still had the atmosphere of a former love hotel. It was a bizarre concept, and perhaps too unusual to succeed. Business was poor, and the restaurant closed in 1998.
After that, the site may have operated briefly as a motel again, but it soon shut down completely. Today, it is an abandoned ruin, heavily deteriorated and overgrown.
Togane City already has a reputation for having many haunted locations, but Hotel Katsugyo is one of the best known among them. It has been introduced nationwide as one of Chiba’s most frightening ghost spots.
The 2004 murder case
In December 2004, a horrific murder took place at the abandoned Hotel Katsugyo site. The case became known as the Mobara high school girl murder case.
A 17-year-old high school student was attacked by five men during a robbery, abducted, and taken to the already-closed Hotel Katsugyo. According to reports, she was assaulted, strangled with an electrical cord, and her body was left in a large refrigerator once used for storing fish.
Because many of the perpetrators were minors, and because the case was so disturbing, media reporting became restricted partway through. For that reason, some people may not know much about the incident today.
Later, two leading perpetrators, both adults at the time, were sentenced to life in prison. One of the perpetrators is said to have died by suicide while incarcerated.
It is an extremely painful and upsetting case.
There is also another rumor often connected to the site. As mentioned above, the Yui Grand Hotel was said to have struggled financially before it became Hotel Katsugyo. Some stories claim that during its love hotel era, a couple staying there got into a fight that led to a stabbing, and that another guest died by suicide there. These rumors are sometimes cited as one reason the business failed.
Unlike the Mobara murder case, however, the truth of these older incidents is unclear.
Reported paranormal activity
Given the violent crime connected to the ruin, along with the older rumors surrounding it, it is not surprising that Hotel Katsugyo became known as a haunted spot.
Many ghost stories and paranormal experiences have been told about the Yui Grand Hotel, and it has appeared in numerous ghost-hunting TV programs and books. For example, on July 16, 2014, the TBS program “World’s Scary Night! A Summer Terror Scream Special” introduced it as one of the strongest haunted spots in the Kanto region.
During the program’s investigation, staff and a psychic entered the site. The psychic reportedly saw multiple spirits, and a door allegedly opened by itself with a loud noise even though no one had touched it. The show presented these as paranormal phenomena, reinforcing the hotel’s reputation as a place that could frighten even experienced psychics.
Hotel Katsugyo has also been featured in publications such as “Ruins Book 3” from Million Publishing.
Safety note
The road leading directly to Hotel Katsugyo is now closed, and the site cannot be legally or safely entered. The building has continued to collapse, and some floors are said to have caved in.
Because the ruin is dangerous and access is restricted, visiting for a thrill or ghost hunt is not recommended. If you are interested in haunted places in Chiba, enjoy the stories from a safe and lawful distance.
Chiba Prefecture has many other well-known haunted locations, including sites associated with murder cases, suicides, and execution grounds, such as Daruma Shrine, Osenkorogashi, and Sakura Castle Ruins Park.

そもそもホテル活魚は、昭和50年代に 「油井グランドホテル」というラブホテル として千葉県東金市にオープンしました。しかし平成7年、建物はそのままに 鮮魚料理店 に経営転換します。地元の漁港から仕入れた魚をいけすで泳がせ、新鮮な魚料理を、いかにもラブホな雰囲気が残る個室でふるまうという珍妙な料理店でした 。しかし斬新過ぎたのか、 経営はまったく振るわず 、平成10年に 廃業 してしまいます。その後、一瞬モーテルとしても経営していたようですが、すぐに廃業。
今では廃墟として、すっかり荒れ放題になっています 。千葉県東金市 といえば、もともと心霊スポットが多数存在するエリアです。しかしホテル活魚はその中でもトップクラスの知名度を持ち、全国的に何度も取り上げられている 最恐心霊スポット なのです。。心霊スポット「ホテル活魚（油井グランドホテル）」の殺人事件と過去の事件。。千葉県の心霊スポット、ホテル活魚（油井グランドホテル）では、 2004年12月に凄惨な殺人事件が起こりました 。茂原女子高生殺人事件 です。
17歳の女子高生 が強盗目的の男性5人に襲われ、 すでに廃業して跡地となっていたホテル活魚 に誘拐されました。そして暴行を受けたすえに電気コードで 絞殺 され、魚を保存するための大きな 冷蔵庫に 遺棄 された というのです。犯人グループに未成年者が多かったことと、凄惨な事件だったため、途中から報道規制が敷かれました 。ですから知らない人も多いかもしれません。その後、主犯格2人（この2人は成人済み）には 無期懲役 が言い渡されたのですが、犯人の1人は獄中で 自殺 したということです。
。胸糞悪くなる事件ですよね……。。ただしここで、気になる噂が1つあります。。そもそも油井グランドホテル（ラブホテル）が経営不振で、ホテル活魚に生まれ変わったと先ほど書きましたが、 ラブホテル時代にも、 宿泊していたカップルが喧嘩のすえに刺傷事件が起きたとか、ほかにも宿泊客の自殺があった と噂されているのです。そんないわくがあったせいで、経営不振になったというのですね。。ただし茂原女子高生殺人事件と違い、この昔あったとされる事件についての真相は、さだかではありません。
