English Version
On Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, it is said that many people suffered during the persecution of hidden Christians in Japan. Kirishitan-zuka, located in Sado City near Prefectural Route 31, is associated with rumors of that tragic history.
According to local stories, people who approach the mound may suddenly feel ill. Others say they have heard the sound of a baby crying from nowhere. There is also a rumor that when a statue of Christ is photographed, it appears to be shedding tears of blood.
Because so many people are believed to have been persecuted in the area, some say the place is filled with lingering resentment and sorrow.
If you visit, treat the site as a place connected to real history and mourning. Stay on public roads or permitted areas, avoid disturbing the surroundings, and be respectful of local residents and any memorials.
