The name Kuchinashi-numa is unsettling even before you know the story behind it.
According to local explanation, the marsh was given its name because it has no visible place where water flows in or out. With no “mouth” for the water, it came to be known as Kuchinashi-numa — the “mouthless marsh.”
It is located in Nishikioka, Tomakomai City, Hokkaido.
For travelers, the atmosphere of the name alone may be enough to make the place feel strange. If you visit the area, stay on public roads or marked paths, avoid entering private or restricted land, and be cautious around wetlands and water.
