Genji Falls is located in Higashi-Kuraji, Katano City, Osaka Prefecture. The waterfall is known not only for its natural setting, but also for several local ghost stories passed around the area.
According to rumor, the spirit of a child who fell to their death at the falls is said to appear here. People also say that hitodama—mysterious floating balls of fire often associated with the dead in Japanese folklore—have been seen along the riverbank.
Another legend tells of Princess Genji, who, overwhelmed by grief, threw herself into the waterfall basin. Nearby is a stone known as the “Night-Crying Stone.” The story goes that the sorrow surrounding the place is so deep that even this stone is said to weep.
The falls themselves have a significant drop, which may be one reason stories of fatal accidents and lingering spirits became attached to the site. If visiting, go during daylight, stay on marked paths, and avoid getting close to the waterfall edge or riverbank, especially after rain.
