English Version
Ninooka Shrine in Gotemba, Shizuoka, is often named as one of the prefecture’s best-known haunted spots.
According to local rumors, the area around the torii gate is where strange phenomena are reported most often. Stories include sightings of a woman in white burial clothing, floating orbs, unsettling voices, and one odd detail: the far-right paper streamer hanging from the torii is said to spin around and around even when there is no wind.
Other accounts mention a knocking sound heard in the restroom near the parking lot, people who supposedly vanished after being “spirited away,” and several alleged hanging suicides in the woods surrounding the shrine.
The shrine is also linked to a number of wartime rumors. Some say there was once an American settlement in front of the shrine. Another story claims that after a B-29 crashed, an American pilot hid beneath the shrine building and was later persecuted. These stories remain rumors, but they add to the eerie atmosphere surrounding the site.
It is also said that the late spiritual figure Oda Mudo once came here to perform an exorcism.
Location: 1939 Higashitanaka, Gotemba, Shizuoka Prefecture.
If you visit, remember that this is a real shrine and a local place of worship. Be respectful, avoid entering restricted areas or the surrounding woods, and do not disturb residents, worshippers, or shrine property.
