Near Oga Aquarium GAO in Oga, Akita, there is a stretch of sea said to have an unsettling reputation.
According to local rumor, a figure dressed in black may appear, bleeding, and follow people from behind. Some versions of the story say that if it catches up to you, you may be possessed.
The view of the coastline is beautiful, but the legend gives the place an unexpectedly frightening atmosphere. Since Nyudozaki is nearby, some people speculate that a spirit connected to that area may have drifted here.
There is also a rumor that someone once jumped into this sea and died by suicide.
The area is around Toga Shiohama in Oga City, Akita Prefecture, near Prefectural Route 59. If you visit for the scenery or the legend, stay on public roads and safe viewing areas, and be especially careful around cliffs, rough water, and after dark.
