Basenkyo Observatory: Rumors of Spirits at a Scenic Viewpoint in Iwate

Modern-Day Religious Hunts: When Belief Becomes Dangerous
目次

English Version

Basenkyo Observatory is located in Ishikiridokoro, Ninohe City, Iwate Prefecture. Around the lookout, there are rumors that the spirits of people who died by suicide have been seen.

Nearby Otokogami-iwa, or “Male God Rock,” is also known locally as a place associated with suicides. The area’s uneasy reputation is deepened by another report: in the mountains nearby, in the Ushimaki district, an unidentified skull believed to have belonged to a man was discovered.

These stories remain local rumors and reports rather than confirmed hauntings. If you visit the area, stay on marked public paths, avoid dangerous cliffs or restricted areas, and do not go alone at night.
