Gongenyama is a mountain of about 200 meters located at Japan’s far southwestern edge, in Nomomachi, Nagasaki City. It is also home to an observation park where visitors can enjoy wide-open views, wild camellias, and cherry blossoms in season.
The area has long had a quiet reputation among local ghost-story fans. A telephone booth here was once said to be haunted, with rumors that a spirit could appear there. The booth has since been removed, but some still say that strange or ghostly images can show up in photos taken around the area.
In the park, there is also an unusual silver-colored object. At its center is the “Magokoro no Kane,” or “Bell of Sincerity,” which was installed with a wish for world peace. According to rumor, anyone who rings the bell three times will be cursed and later get caught up in an accident. Whether that story is anything more than local folklore is, of course, uncertain.
Gongenyama is a public scenic spot rather than an abandoned ruin, so visitors should enjoy it respectfully, stay on designated paths, and avoid visiting in unsafe weather or after dark if conditions are poor.
