English Version

Takashimadaira Danchi, a large housing complex in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, has long been associated with unsettling rumors and ghost stories.

People have reported sightings said to be the spirits of a young girl or a young woman. There are also rumors that, late at night, a human-shaped shadow can be seen falling from an upper floor toward the ground below.

The area became widely known after a tragic incident in April 1977, when a father and his two children died by suicide. After the incident was reported by the mass media, the number of suicides connected to the complex reportedly reached 133 by 1980, becoming a social issue at the time. Because of this history, Takashimadaira Danchi has often been described as one of Japan’s so-called “suicide spots.”

Today, the complex is also associated with Japan’s broader problems of a declining birthrate and aging population. Some accounts say that solitary deaths among elderly residents, as well as suicides, remain a concern.

Location: 3-11 Takashimadaira, Itabashi-ku, Tokyo.

If you visit the area, remember that this is a real residential neighborhood. Do not enter buildings or private areas without permission, avoid disturbing residents, and be respectful of the people who live there and of the tragedies connected to the site.
