English Version
On a certain night in 1971, so the rumor goes, the last train passed through the site of the Mikawashima accident—and passengers saw many human figures on the tracks, missing arms, legs, or even heads.
Even today, some people say that after the final train has gone, large numbers of spirits can be seen wandering around the area.
The story is tied to the Mikawashima Accident, a major railway disaster that occurred at around 9:37 p.m. on May 3, 1962, inside Mikawashima Station on the Joban Line. A derailment led to a series of multiple train collisions, killing as many as 160 people.
One victim is said to remain unidentified. According to accounts, he was not riding any of the trains. Instead, he was apparently walking along the tracks when he was caught up in the disaster, leaving behind a lingering mystery.
The area is associated with Mikawashima Station in Higashi-Nippori, Arakawa City, Tokyo, around 3-14-2 Higashi-Nippori. If you visit, do not enter railway property or approach the tracks. Observe only from safe, public areas and follow all local rules.
