English Version
At Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu, there is a large zelkova tree near the third corner of the track. According to a long-running rumor, the tree has been considered an obstruction for spectators watching the races, and there were several attempts in the past to cut it down. Each time, however, misfortune was said to befall people connected to the work, and the plan was abandoned.
Another part of the story claims that racehorses have suffered an unusual number of injuries or accidents around this part of the course. Because of this, some people have linked the incidents to the old tree.
The legend says that beneath the great zelkova is the grave of Ida Settsu-no-kami Koremasa, a military commander from Japan’s Sengoku period. Some have suggested that the accidents and misfortunes may be connected to a curse, or lingering anger, associated with Ida Koremasa.
The site is associated with the area around 3-23-3 Koremasa, Fuchu City, Tokyo. Tokyo Racecourse is an active public venue, so visitors should only enter during official opening hours and stay within permitted spectator areas. Do not attempt to access the track, restricted zones, or any protected tree or grave site.
