Roppongi Hills is one of Tokyo’s most polished landmarks: a stylish complex of shops, restaurants, offices, museums, and observation decks in the heart of Roppongi. Since opening in 2003, it has been seen as a symbol of cutting-edge culture and a city that never sleeps.
But among Japanese ghost-story fans, Roppongi Hills is sometimes described as a “negative power spot.” That does not mean the place is proven to be haunted, but it has attracted a number of unsettling rumors tied to its history, location, and several high-profile incidents.
Why Is Roppongi Hills Called a “Negative Power Spot”?
Roppongi Hills has been connected in rumor to a series of accidents, scandals, and disturbing events that drew public attention.
Stories often mention the fatal revolving-door accident, the discovery of a fetus abandoned in a garbage collection area, the collapse of Lehman Brothers, economic crime cases such as the Murakami Fund and Comsn scandals, and the suspicious death of a woman in a drug-related case involving a celebrity.
Of course, these incidents can be understood as separate events with no supernatural connection. Still, because so many dark stories have been associated with the area since the complex was completed, some people began calling Roppongi Hills a place with unusually negative energy.
Built in an Unlucky Direction?
Another reason the area is linked to occult rumors comes from Onmyodo, Japan’s traditional system of yin-yang cosmology. In Onmyodo, the northeast direction is known as the kimon, or “demon gate,” while the southwest is called the ura-kimon, the “back demon gate.” Both directions were historically considered unlucky.
According to one theory, if you take the site of Edo Castle—today’s Imperial Palace—as the center point, Roppongi Hills stands in the southwest ura-kimon direction.
There are also rumors that the complex was built after four temples were demolished, and that gravestones were damaged by construction machinery during the redevelopment. These stories are repeated in haunted-place discussions, though they should be treated as local rumor rather than confirmed fact.
Mori Garden and the Akō Ronin
Inside the Roppongi Hills grounds is Mori Garden, now a calm public garden and popular photo spot. However, the land is said to have once been the site of a samurai residence.
According to the story, ten of the Akō Ronin—the famous samurai connected to the revenge tale of the Forty-Seven Ronin—committed seppuku in this area.
After World War II, there were people who wanted to build a factory on the land. Masataka Taketsuru of Nikka Whisky purchased the site and established a Tokyo factory there. It is said that he spoke of the pond on the property, known as Nikka Pond, as a place with a long and significant history.
One rumored warning went something like this: the pond must have a guardian spirit, and if it were destroyed, that spirit’s curse would fall on someone. If not on the person responsible, then on their descendants.
Later, when the land rights passed from Nikka Whisky to TV Asahi, plans for large-scale redevelopment began to move forward.
Is the Pond in Mori Garden Artificial?
The pond now seen in Mori Garden is said to have been created by preserving and filling over the original pond, covering it with sheets and other materials, and then building a new pond above it.
In that sense, the current pond is described as artificial rather than the original natural pond.
According to occult rumors, the land was already recognized as dangerous before construction began, and spiritual practitioners attempted to purify it. Those attempts supposedly did not go well.
Because of this, ghost stories connected to the site include sightings of earthbound spirits, fallen warriors, and even the spirit of an old woman washing severed heads.
Another strange rumor concerns the giant spider sculpture at Roppongi Hills. Some say it was placed there to seal away negative energy caused by the disturbed magnetic field of the area.
Again, these are legends and rumors, not verified facts. Roppongi Hills remains a major public destination visited by countless people every day. If you go, enjoy the shops, museums, observation areas, and Mori Garden respectfully, follow posted rules, and never enter restricted or private areas in search of ghost stories.
