Sengan Tunnel: Ghost Rumors on Akita’s Accident-Prone Road

Thought Experiment: Epiphenomenalism, Qualia, and the Question of Free Will

English Version

Sengan Tunnel is said to be a long tunnel on the Akita Kaido, in the Tazawako Obonai area of Semboku City, Akita Prefecture.

According to local rumors, the tunnel has been the scene of multiple accidents over the years, including vehicle collisions. There are also stories of boards or panels falling from the ceiling, with fatal results. Perhaps because of these incidents, some people claim to have seen the ghost of a woman inside the tunnel.

The area around Sengan Tunnel was reportedly known as an accident-prone spot even before the ghost stories spread. There are also rumors that another accident happened there recently.

For travelers, this is not a place to treat like a haunted attraction. If you pass through the tunnel, stay in your vehicle, do not stop in unsafe areas, and drive carefully, especially at night or in bad weather.
