There are many ideas about the origin of humanity, from evolution and academic theories to religious creation stories. One controversial ancient-astronaut theory claims that clay tablets left behind by the ancient Sumerians contain references suggesting that “humanity was created by the alien Anunnaki.” This idea was popularized by Zecharia Sitchin, whose interpretations helped bring the so-called “slave creation theory” into occult and alternative-history discussions: the rumor that the Anunnaki created humans to serve them.
The Anunnaki and the Missing Link
Our series introduces the origins of the theory that the Anunnaki were humanity’s creators, along with the basic idea of the “missing link” in evolutionary theory. It also touches on clay tablets discovered in the ruins of Mesopotamian civilization and the passages that some interpreters connect to the Anunnaki.
The ancient Sumerians, who are said to have preserved this creator-god theory on clay tablets, were among the oldest known cultural peoples of the world’s great ancient civilizations. They developed cuneiform, often described as the world’s first writing system, and built what is considered one of the earliest class-based societies. Their civilization was highly advanced for its time.
Sumerian Mythology and the Anunnaki
The series also introduces the Anunnaki as they appear in Sumerian mythology, including the idea that an Anunnaki deity served as the guardian god of a city regarded as a Sumerian capital. It also looks at later traditions, including Akkadian mythology, where the Anunnaki continued to appear.
Even as the Mesopotamian world changed over time, these mythological systems did not simply disappear. The articles consider possible gaps and questions in common explanations of “the origin of species,” as well as broader problems surrounding human evolution. They also discuss the once widely talked-about similarity between human and chimpanzee DNA.
Katakamuna, Japanese Myth, and the Anunnaki Theory
The series further examines possible connections between the Anunnaki theory and the Katakamuna documents, which are generally treated as apocryphal or unreliable by Japanese academic circles.
It also raises a question often found in occult interpretations of Japanese myth: could the descent of the heavenly grandson described in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki be interpreted as an invasion from the heavens by a divine bloodline?
The Anunnaki survive in myths, oral traditions, and alternative-history theories, but there are no confirmed eyewitness accounts of what they actually looked like, or whether they existed at all. Still, believers point out that the period discussed in academic accounts of human evolution overlaps with the supposed era in which the Anunnaki are said to have created humanity.
