About a month ago, a treatment known in Japan as “blood cleansing” caused a stir on Twitter. The procedure involves mixing a person’s own blood with medical ozone in the hope of improving health. Critics have called it ineffective pseudomedicine, and some doctors have warned that it may even be dangerous. A few celebrities who had posted photos or tweets about receiving the treatment later deleted them.
Blood cleansing has no solid medical basis. But Japan is not the only place where blood-related treatments have become controversial. A similar debate once drew attention in New York.
A clinic that claimed young blood could fight aging
In 2018, news spread that a certain clinic was planning to open in New York. At first glance, it sounded like a beauty or anti-aging clinic. The unusual part was that the treatment would use blood from young people.
The clinic was operated by a startup called Ambrosia Medical. Its CEO reportedly began with a question: if experiments showed that injecting blood from young mice into older mice made the older mice more energetic, could the same idea be applied to humans?
In 2017, the company carried out clinical trials and claimed to have found effects such as improved memory. However, other researchers pointed out problems with the experiment, and the results do not appear to have been widely accepted. Some researchers even mocked Ambrosia Medical’s work as “vampiric.”
Still, many people in the United States want to look and feel younger. According to reports, Ambrosia Medical received many inquiries from people living in New York.
The countess who sought beauty in blood
The idea of seeking youth through young blood did not begin in the modern age. One of the most famous figures connected to this theme is Elizabeth Báthory, a real noblewoman who lived around the 16th century.
Today, some people may know her as a character in the popular game Fate/Grand Order. Historically, however, Elizabeth Báthory became feared as the “Blood Countess.” She was a Hungarian aristocrat who was said to have murdered young girls one after another, treating their blood as a medicine for regaining youth. According to the famous account, she gathered large amounts of blood in an attempt to return to her younger self.
Eventually, a girl who escaped brought the incidents to light. Because Báthory was a noblewoman, she was not executed. Instead, she was confined to her bedroom until her death.
Was rejuvenation really the only reason?
Elizabeth Báthory’s story is extremely famous, and many horror fans may already know it. But even within that story, her alleged desire for youth was not the only motive. She is often described as having a sadistic nature, and the accounts say she took pleasure in torturing girls and hearing them scream.
The exact number of victims remains unclear, but at least 30 people are said to have been killed. The castle once owned by Elizabeth Báthory still exists in Hungary. If you choose to visit, treat it as a historic site: check official access information, follow local rules, and do not enter restricted areas.
Why do people think young blood has anti-aging power?
From old legends to modern clinics, young blood has repeatedly been associated with rejuvenation. But what does the science actually say?
In 2016, a research team at the University of California, Berkeley investigated the idea and reported that they found no effect that could truly be called rejuvenation. In fact, they announced that they had found factors that appeared to promote aging instead.
So what experiment inspired the CEO of Ambrosia Medical? It is believed he was interested in studies involving parabiosis, in which a young mouse and an old mouse are surgically joined side by side. As the name suggests, the two mice are connected so that they share bodily systems. The procedure is as graphic as it sounds.
Another company, Alkahest, which aimed to improve cognitive function, also announced research suggesting that human plasma might have rejuvenating effects. Against this background, the idea that young blood could slow aging gradually became more widely discussed.
The risks of receiving young blood
In 2019, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which oversees food and medicine in the United States, warned that anti-aging treatments using young blood could be dangerous.
The FDA stated that these treatments had not been proven clinically effective in medicine. It also warned of possible harms, including allergic reactions and infections. The agency advised anyone considering such a procedure to first seek a physician’s diagnosis and advice, then think carefully before proceeding.
In Japan, the blood cleansing controversy also led many medical professionals to urge the public to learn more about blood. For example, blood changes color because of hemoglobin. When hemoglobin is carrying oxygen, blood appears bright red. When oxygen levels are lower, it becomes darker red.
Some people who receive blood cleansing seem to mistake dark red blood for “dirty” blood. Medically, however, that color can be completely normal.
The beauty treatment you want may be dangerous
Most people want to stay young as long as possible. For anyone who feels that way, a beauty treatment promising rejuvenation can be very tempting.
But before receiving any unusual medical or cosmetic procedure, it is best to research it carefully and consult qualified medical professionals. If you accept a treatment without checking the evidence, you may end up becoming a victim of the same kind of questionable medicine that made blood cleansing so controversial.

いきなりだが1ヶ月ほど前に、Twitterにて 血液クレンジング が物議となったことをご存知だろうか。血液クレンジングとは、 自分の血液と医療用オゾンを混ぜて健康な体を目指す施術 なのだが、効果が無いトンデモ医療だと指摘されている。むしろ危険な行為という医者もいるほどであり、実際に施術してもらった芸能人の中には、血液クレンジングに関する写真やツイートを削除した方もいた。確かに血液クレンジングは医学的根拠が無い施術なのだが、このような血液に関する施術はニューヨークでも問題になったことがある。
一体、ニューヨークではどのような血液トラブルが起きたのだろうか。若者の血で若返らせる？クリニック。。2018年、ニューヨークにとあるクリニックが開設予定というニュースが一躍注目を浴びた。一見すると美容系のクリニックなのだが、 施術の際に若者の血 を使うのだ。クリニックは「Ambrosia Medical」というスタートアップ企業が運営する。この会社のCEOは、 「若いネズミの血液を高齢のネズミに注入すると元気になったという実験結果を人間に活用できないか？
」 という観点から研究を開始。2017年に臨床実験を行うと、記憶力の向上といった効果を発見した。しかし、実験の不備などを他の研究者から指摘されており、多くの人に認められたものでは無い模様。研究者の中には、「Ambrosia Medical」の行う行為を吸血鬼だと揶揄する方 もいる。ただ若返りたい人はアメリカでも数多く、ニューヨークに住む人々から「Ambrosia Medical」に対して数多くの問い合わせが届いている。美しくなるために血を求めた伯爵夫人。
。若者の血を求めて若返りを求めるという行為は、実は今になって始まったことではない。代表的な人物としては、 16世紀頃に実在したエリザベート・バートリー がいる。現在では大人気ゲームであるFGOのキャラクターとしても知られているが、実際のエリザベート・バートリーは 「血の伯爵夫人」 として恐れられた人物だ。エリザベート・バートリーはハンガリーで生まれた貴族であり、 若返るための薬として少女を次々と殺害 。大量の血液を集めて、若い頃の自分に戻るために努力した。
最終的には脱走した少女によって事件が公になり、 エリザベート・バートリーは死ぬまで寝室に幽閉。貴族ということもあり、死刑にされることは無かった。本当に若返り目的で血を求めたのか？。エリザベート・バートリーの話は非常に有名であり、知っている方がいるかもしれない。しかし、彼女が若返りだけの理由で血を求めたというわけではない。彼女はいわゆるサディスト的な性格であり、若返りのために血を求めた以外にも拷問によって少女が泣き叫ぶ姿が楽しかったという背景もある。
実際に殺された人数は曖昧だが、少なくとも30人が犠牲となった。ちなみに、エリザベート・バートリーが所有していた城は現在でもハンガリーに残っている。気になる方は、行ってみてはいかがだろうか。若者の血に若返り効果があると言われる理由。。今も昔も若者の血には若返りの効果があるとされているが、実際のところどうなのだろうか。2016年にカリフォルニア大学バークレー校の研究チームが調べてみたところ、若返り効果といえるようなものは全く見つからなかったという結果に。
。むしろ、老化を促進させるものが見つかったと発表しました。問題は「Ambrosia Medical」のCEOは、どの実験を見て若返りクリニックのヒントを得たのか。「Ambrosia Medical」のCEOが注目したのは、若いネズミと高齢のネズミを並体結合すると健康になったという実験だと思われる。並体結合は名前どおり、ネズミを横に並べて繋げること。繋げ方の具体例に関しては、グロテスクだが以下の動画を見て欲しい。。他にAlkahestという認知機能改善を目指す会社では、人間の血漿に若返り効果があるという研究成果を発表。
これらのデータを背景に、若者の血に若返りの効果があると次第に言われるようになった。若者の血を入れるのは危険行為。2019年、 アメリカの食品や医薬品を管理するアメリカ食品医薬品局（FDA）はこのような若者の血を使って若返りを目指す行為が危険だと発表 した。FDAは若者の血を巡る問題に対して、医療における臨床的な有効性が証明されていないだけではなく、アレルギー反応や感染症といった害をもたらす危険性を指摘。その上でFDAは、もし実際に受けてみたいのであれば、まずは医師の診断やアドバイスを受けた上で慎重に検討して欲しいとも述べている。
。日本でも、血液クレンジングをきっかけに多くの医療関係者が血液に対して改めて知識をつけるように声を挙げている。例えば、血液はヘモグロビンによって色が変わるということ。ヘモグロビンが酸素を運んでいるときには明るい赤になり、酸素が少なくなると暗い赤に変わる。血液クレンジングを受けた方の中には、暗い赤を汚い血液と思い込んでしまう方が多い模様だ。ただ、医学的に見ると何ら問題なく正常な血液である証である。あなたが受けたい美容施術は危険かもしれない。
