Around the world, there are foods that can shock visitors from Japan: pigeon meat in Egypt, balut in the Philippines, and even escargot in French cuisine, which must have seemed surprising to many people at first.
But Japan has also had its own truly shocking food-related event. In 2012, an unprecedented tasting party drew controversy across the country. It became known as the penis tasting event.
What happened at the event?
The concept was disturbingly simple: participants were offered the chance to eat a severed human penis.
It may sound unbelievable, but around 70 people reportedly gathered at the venue. According to a blog written by a man who actually ate the dish, the preparation was described in detail.
First, the penis was soaked in white wine to reduce its smell and add flavor. It was then lightly sautéed, and finally cooked together with pre-steamed testicles and mushrooms. When served, it was plated with sauce, giving the dish an oddly refined appearance.
As for the taste, the blog’s verdict was not flattering. The penis was apparently so tough that it was difficult even to bite through, let alone savor. The testicles could at least be tasted, but they were not described as delicious. Other reported reactions included claims that it tasted like semen or sweat.
In short, human penis did not seem to be suitable as food.
Whose body part was it?
The obvious question is: whose penis was cooked?
According to reports at the time, it belonged to a self-described artist. The artist had the body part surgically removed after deciding that sex or gender was not necessary for their work as an artist. The tasting event was then held to help recover the cost of the surgery.
Because of that, the pricing was also unusual. General admission was 4,000 yen per person, while VIP participants who actually ate the dish paid 20,000 yen. Whether that sounds expensive or cheap depends entirely on your point of view.
The event vs. the authorities
Because the event was so extreme, local authorities became involved afterward.
First, police in Suginami Ward, where the event took place, investigated the self-described artist. However, they reportedly found no specific criminal violation.
Next, the public health office inspected the live house, or small music venue, where the event had been held. The venue did have the proper restaurant business license, but officials warned it about handling human flesh and about cooking outside the designated kitchen area.
The venue later stated that what was meant to be an underground event had caused far more trouble than expected, and it reportedly vowed never to host anything like it again.
Human penis is not food, but animal penis is different
While human penis is not something people should attempt to eat, animal penis is a different matter in some food cultures.
For example, bull penis can be purchased through online shopping in Japan, and the price is said to be around 4,000 yen. Some people have cooked and eaten it, and a few have even described it as tasty.
There have also been women-only dining events featuring dishes such as hot pot with bull penis and fried testicles. The names may sound unappetizing, but the dishes reportedly received surprisingly positive reviews. The general impression was that, when properly prepared, these parts can become edible ingredients.

イベント内容は至ってシンプルであり、切断された人間のペニスを食べてみようというものだ。クレイジーなイベントと思うかもしれないが、実際に 70 人ほどが会場に集った。本格的に調理されたペニス料理。。一体どのようにペニスを調理するのか検討できないかもしれないか、実際にペニスを食べた男性のブログにはイベントの詳細や調理風景が細かく記載されている。まずペニスの匂いを取るためと味付けのために、白ワインにペニスを漬ける。次に軽く炒めた後に蒸しておいた睾丸とマッシュルームと一緒に焼いて、前代未聞のペニス料理が完成。
。提供される際には、ソースをかけておしゃれな雰囲気に仕上げられている。ペニスは味わうどころから噛み切れない。実際に調理されたペニスは、一体どんな味なのだろうか。ブログでは、硬すぎて味わえないと記載されている。睾丸だけはなんとか味わえるものの美味しいものではないという結果に終わった。他の意見では、精子や汗の味がしたという声も上がったとのこと。どうやら、人間のペニスは食用に向いていないようだ。なぜペニスを料理にしようと思ったのか？。。そもそもの問題だが、一体誰のペニスを調理したのだろうか。
。料理に使われたペニスは自称画家のもの であり、画家として活躍する上で性別は必要ないと考えて切除。その際の 手術費用を回収するために、ペニス試食会という前代未聞のイベントを開催 した。そのこともあり、参加費用は 1 名 4,000 円で実際にペニスを食べる VIP は 2 万円。この価格を高いと思うか安いと思うかは、あなた次第だ。ペニス試食会 VS 行政。あまりにもクレイジーなイベントだったこともあり、イベント開催後に行政が動き出した。
まずはイベント開催地であった杉並区の警察が、自称画家を調査。しかし、特に犯罪に触れるものは無かった。次に保健所がイベントを開催したライブハウスへ立ち入り調査。飲食店としての営業許可をきちんともらっているものの、 人肉を扱ったことや調理場以外での調理を行ったこと などをライブハウスへ注意した。ライブハウス側もアンダーグラウンドで楽しむはずが予想以上に影響を及ぼしてしまい、二度とこのようなイベントを開催しないことを誓っている。人間のペニスは食べられないが…。
人間のペニスは食用に向いていないが、動物のペニスであれば実際に食べることができる。例えば牛のペニスであればネットショッピングで購入することもでき、 4,000 円ほどと意外に安い価格だ。実際に調理して食べてみた方もおり、美味しいと語っている。。ペニスや睾丸などを楽しむ女子会。動物のペニスなら味わえることもあり、過去には女性限定でペニスや睾丸を食べるイベントが開催された。牛のペニスが入った鍋や睾丸の唐揚げなど、名前だけでは不味そうに思えるが、意外にも美味しいと高評価。
