The Mirror Well at Chomeiji Temple: A Nerima Legend of Reflections and Omens

Bloody Mary: The History and Rumored Origins Behind the Mirror Legend
目次

English Version

At Chomeiji Temple, also known as Higashi Koyasan Chomeiji, there is an old well that has long been tied to an unsettling local legend.

According to accounts passed around the area, many people have claimed that when they looked into the well, the face reflected on the water was not their own. Instead, they say they saw the face of a young girl staring back.

The well also has an older tradition connected to it. It is said that if you peer into the water and see your own face clearly reflected on the surface, you will be blessed with a long life.

However, there is another, darker rumor: if the surface of the water ripples while you are looking into the well, it is said to be an omen of death.

Chomeiji Temple is located around 3-10-3 Takanodai, Nerima City, Tokyo. If you visit, remember that this is an active religious site. Follow posted rules, avoid restricted areas, and do not lean over or touch any wells or temple structures.
