English Version

Around the world, there are many famous prophets and prophetic texts. In Japan, one of the best-known is the Hitsuki Shinji, often described as a book of divine revelations.

Many people in Japan have heard the name, but fewer know the details. Believers say the Hitsuki Shinji foretold many events in modern Japan, including war, natural disasters, and the country’s postwar recovery. Of course, these are interpretations, and the text is often vague or symbolic. Still, for fans of Japanese occult culture, it remains one of the country’s most fascinating prophetic works.

What Is the Hitsuki Shinji?

The Hitsuki Shinji is a Japanese prophetic text said to contain messages from the gods.

It was published between 1944 and 1961 by Okamoto Tenmei, a Shinto researcher and painter. The writings are said to have come through a phenomenon known as automatic writing. In other words, the brush was believed to move on its own, as if guided by something outside the writer’s conscious will.

According to the story, even Okamoto himself did not initially understand what had been written. As the text was later deciphered, it was said to be a book brought down by the deity Kunitokotachi no Mikoto. Because Okamoto was a believer in Shinto, some followers say this is why that particular deity descended to deliver the message.

The Hitsuki Shinji contains many passages that believers interpret as accurate predictions. These include Japan’s defeat in the Pacific War and its later recovery.

Famous Prophecies

Japan’s Defeat in World War II

One passage is often interpreted as referring to the firebombing of Tokyo:

> Edo will become a sea of fire no matter what. Japan will seem to collapse once, and a world without gods or Buddhas will come. Tokyo, too, will return to the earth for a time, so be prepared.

Many readers connect this to the Tokyo air raids during World War II. In the actual bombings by B-29 aircraft, large areas of the city burned, homes were destroyed, and parts of Tokyo were left in ruins.

For believers, this is one of the clearest examples of the Hitsuki Shinji “coming true.”

Mount Fuji

Another passage is connected to Mount Fuji:

> Mount Fuji will clear, and Japan will be bright. The time is near when the heavenly ruler will send divine power from Fuji throughout the world. Fuji is a mountain of fire, a mountain of the origin of fire. Because it is a sacred mountain that must not be defiled, the people will become unable to climb it.

This is often interpreted as a prophecy of an eruption of Mount Fuji. The idea is that Fuji, though sacred, has been “defiled” by too many climbers, and that an eruption would cleanse the mountain.

Mount Fuji is a real and active volcano. If you plan to visit, follow official trail rules, weather warnings, and local safety guidance, especially during climbing season.

A Threat From the North

Another ominous passage mentions a hostile force coming from the north:

> The evil god of great wickedness who rose up in Russia and came down will finally press toward the land of the gods. When it attacks from the north, it will be the beginning of the end of this world.

This is usually read literally as a prophecy that Russia will move against Japan, the “land of the gods.” Some interpret it as a prediction of a future World War III, though this remains speculation.

The Great East Japan Earthquake

The text also contains a warning about tsunamis:

> Beware of the ocean’s tsunami. I will tell you beforehand again.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, many people looked back at this line and connected it to the devastating tsunami that swept away towns along the coast. Believers argue that the disaster had been foretold by the Hitsuki Shinji.

What Makes It Different From Other Prophecies?

One reason the Hitsuki Shinji stands out from other prophetic texts is that it sometimes gives specific dates or months, not just abstract warnings.

One passage says:

> Beware the 8th and the 18th, and the months of May, September, and October.

It also describes disasters in vivid language:

> Earthquakes, thunder, and rain of fire will fall, and there will be a great cleansing. Unless you are very firm, you will not be able to live. Because it will be a great cleansing by great earthquakes and rain of fire, even if one person tries to escape, not even a god can escape.

The phrase “not even a god can escape” may suggest something like the end of the world, at least to some readers.

The original article noted that, as of 2019, earthquakes had felt frequent in Japan, sometimes strong enough to be physically felt more than once in a day. Japan is an earthquake-prone country, so travelers should always know basic earthquake safety: check local alerts, follow instructions from authorities, and learn evacuation routes at your accommodation.

What Is “Ishiya” in the Hitsuki Shinji?

In the Hitsuki Shinji, a group called “Ishiya” appears several times as an evil organization.

The article identifies this “Ishiya” as the Freemasons. The reasoning given is that Freemasons were originally associated with stonemasons, and “Ishiya” can be understood as “stone workers.” As with many occult interpretations, this is a claim made by believers and should be treated cautiously.

Not Only Fear: Words of Advice

The Hitsuki Shinji is not only filled with frightening warnings. It also contains lines that can be read as moral advice:

> Giving things is not easy. You must give carefully and for good. You have been told that to give is to receive. You must have a heart of gratitude that allows you to give. If you push strongly, it will rebound strongly; if you push weakly, it will rebound weakly. There is not a single thing that is truly your own. If you understand this, you will understand the new path.

This seems to mean that what you give to others eventually returns to you.

In the writer’s interpretation, the more good you do for others, and the greater that good is, the greater the good that may return to you. Hearing this kind of message can make the Hitsuki Shinji feel less like pure horror and more like a strange spiritual warning about how to live.

Final Thoughts

The Hitsuki Shinji remains one of Japan’s most famous prophetic texts. Some readers believe its predictions are highly convincing, while others see them as symbolic writings that were later matched to historical events.

Either way, for travelers and horror fans interested in Japanese folklore, Shinto mysticism, and occult culture, it is a fascinating window into Japan’s modern prophetic legends.
