English Version

At Kohinata Shrine in Bunkyo City, Tokyo, there is a legend about a ginkgo tree where the face of a woman is said to appear, glowing white.

The story is said to come from an experience attributed to Sasaki Kizen. According to the legend, Kizen had been involved romantically with many women, and his mental state had begun to deteriorate. One day, he visited Kohinata Shrine and saw a woman’s face shining pale white in the ginkgo tree.

The face, the story says, belonged to a woman he had once been involved with—and with whom he had parted in a cruel and painful way.

Kohinata Shrine is located at 2-16-6 Kohinata, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. If you visit, remember that it is a real shrine in a residential area. Be respectful, avoid disturbing worshippers or neighbors, and do not enter any restricted areas.
