Horose Tunnel: A Remote Haunted Spot in Akita Linked to a Hooded Student Rumor

Japan’s Self-Restraint Police: When COVID Vigilantism Went Too Far

English Version

Horose Tunnel is a quiet mountain tunnel said to stand deep in the area of Babame, Gojome Town, Minamiakita District, Akita Prefecture, along Prefectural Route 15.

According to local rumor, a male high school student wearing a hood is said to come walking toward people in this area. The same figure is also said to appear inside the tunnel itself.

Set alone in the mountains, the tunnel’s isolated appearance would likely feel unsettling even without the ghost story. The bridge in front of the tunnel is also rumored to be known as a suicide spot, which adds to the dark reputation surrounding the area.

If you visit, treat the location with respect and caution. Mountain roads can be narrow, dark, and poorly lit, and rumors connected to death or suicide should be approached sensitively. Do not trespass, block traffic, or enter unsafe areas.
