English Version
Near Lake Towada stands the well-known Statue of Maidens, and local rumors say strange phenomena are more likely to occur around it.
One story claims that if you visit at night, the direction of the statue’s hands may appear to have changed. Like many lakeside ghost stories, this is told as a rumor rather than a confirmed event, but it adds to the uneasy atmosphere surrounding the area.
Lake Towada, which straddles Aomori and Akita Prefectures, is also known for a number of mysterious tales. It is said that when someone dies by drowning in the lake, the body may never float back to the surface. This has been explained by the lake’s low water temperature and the plants or algae on the lakebed.
However, another rumor says that if a relative of the deceased comes to the lake and calls out their name, the body will be found within a few days.
Location: Towada Road, Lake Towada, Kosaka, Kazuno District, Akita Prefecture.
If you visit, stay in public areas, avoid the lakeshore at night, and never enter restricted zones or the water.
