Yubetsu Coal Mine in Akan-cho, Kushiro, Hokkaido, is known among ghost-spot enthusiasts as a place so intense that people who claim to be highly sensitive to spirits have reportedly fainted there.
There are also rumors of visitors feeling as if they have been possessed. Even people who do not consider themselves spiritually sensitive are said to have experienced dizziness, chills, and other sudden physical discomfort.
The mine also had a grim history of repeated accidents. Many of them were gas explosions, and a considerable number of lives were lost. Cave-ins and roof-collapse accidents were also frequent, resulting in many deaths and injuries.
Today, the area is remembered both for its industrial past and for the unsettling stories attached to it. If you visit the wider area, do not enter restricted zones or abandoned structures. Old mine sites can be unstable, dangerous, and off-limits.
