Hotokegaura, in Sai Village on the Shimokita Peninsula of Aomori Prefecture, is said to be a place where the boundary between this world and the next grows thin.
According to local legend, taking stones or sand from the area can bring misfortune. Travelers should treat the coast with respect and avoid removing anything from the site.
There are also darker rumors connected to the shoreline. Because of the ocean currents, it is said that the bodies of people who drowned or died by suicide sometimes wash ashore here.
For that reason, the area has also been known by the grim nickname “Dozaemon-ga-ura,” a name associated with drowned bodies.
Hotokegaura is a real coastal destination, famous for its dramatic rock formations and remote atmosphere. If you visit, check weather and sea conditions in advance, stay on safe routes, and avoid approaching dangerous surf or restricted areas.
